Position Overview

Title: Interprofessional Educator (Full-time, permanent)

Location: Toronto Rehab, E. W. Bickle Centre site (with occasional travel to other locations)
Department: Professional Practice
Reports to: Director, Professional Practice
Shifts: Primarily daytime; occasional shift work may be necessary

As an integral member of the Toronto Rehab Professional Practice Leadership Team, the Interprofessional Educator serves as a clinical authority and resource for clinical programs, with responsibilities encompassing leadership, staff development, quality enhancement, and academic contributions. This role typically oversees clinical and professional practice initiatives across allied health disciplines while also fostering and supporting activities related to patient care, education, and research.

Key Responsibilities

Support the objectives of TR Professional Practice and clinical programs:

Contribute to the formulation of practice priorities, goals, and objectives that align with both TR's and UHN's strategic plans. Engage in the recruitment, orientation, and training of allied health personnel as necessary. Communicate and disseminate pertinent practice-based information to staff. Provide feedback to management regarding staff performance when needed. Adhere to UHN policies and procedures; foster a work environment that promotes civility and respect.

Facilitate quality patient-centered care provision by health professionals in accordance with established standards:

Ensure that patient care activities of staff are consistent with best practices. Develop metrics to assess the application of standards at the point of care. Encourage staff participation in clinical quality improvement initiatives. Lead the development and implementation of interprofessional practices and processes.

Ensure the effective functioning of all Health Professions through leadership and mentorship:

Establish strong communication links with staff and other stakeholders, particularly Discipline Heads, to advance profession-specific practices. Act as a resource for allied health workload measurement activities. Contribute to program development initiatives. Participate in policy development or revision. Engage in site-specific and corporate committees as appropriate. Cultivate and maintain relationships with external partners, such as academic institutions, to achieve established goals and share information. Provide coverage for other practice leaders during their absences as required.

Deliver and engage in the development of professional education activities for staff and learners:

Participate in the creation and delivery of interprofessional education, including physical lifts and transfers education and annual professional development days. Assist with the orientation of Personal Support Workers (PSWs) as needed. Promote continuing education, coaching, and mentoring of others. Facilitate and support scholarly activities such as academic appointments, teaching, academic lectures, publications, and/or research. Model personal professional development through participation in conferences, independent learning, and advanced certification. Support the supervision of allied health students in collaboration with other leaders and educators. Engage in additional educational activities within TR, UHN, the University of Toronto, the community, and professional associations as appropriate.

Develop, support, and/or conduct practice-based research:

Facilitate clinical research opportunities with staff as appropriate and in collaboration with others. Promote the dissemination of research knowledge, including presentations at professional conferences and writing research articles for publication in professional journals.

Strategic Activities:

Support and implement the vision, values, and strategic plans of UHN and Toronto Rehab. Provide input into model of care changes in collaboration with operational leaders. Serve as a resource for programs regarding workload measurement activities of health professions. Ensure health professions are informed of emerging knowledge and trends in healthcare. Lead or participate in local or organization-wide committees. Utilize data and demonstrate proficiency in information technology related to patient care.

Perform area-specific clinical functions in collaboration with other clinical team members:

Provide clinical support in the area of practice in collaboration with others. Lead and facilitate innovation in implementing practice models that promote interprofessional practice at the point of care. Ensure that patient care activities align with regulatory standards of practice and UHN policies and procedures. Maintain personal clinical practice and area of professional specialization. Serve as a role model for staff; support and mentor colleagues. Lead development activities to meet staff and program needs.

Perform cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification as assigned or requested.

Compliance and Qualifications

Education:

A minimum of a master's degree in a health profession or recognized equivalent is required.

Experience:

A minimum of 3-5 years of practical and related experience is required.

Professional Affiliations/Memberships:

Registration with the appropriate Health Professions Regulatory College is required.

Additional Skills:

Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN, and/or health discipline-specific policies. Patient-centered orientation. Experience working with behaviorally challenging patients is considered an asset. Proven leadership competencies. Strong presentation and project management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Strong time management and organizational skills. Comprehensive knowledge in rehabilitation clinical care. Proficiency in computer literacy, including familiarity with Epic electronic clinical information systems.
