Under the supervision of the Supervisor, Patient Care and Service Delivery, and in collaboration with a clinician, the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) will play a vital role in the healthcare team at the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre. The facility caters to a diverse range of patients, enabling RVTs to engage in activities related to both companion and large animals.
Key Areas of Responsibility for Registered Veterinary Technicians at OVC HSC:
- Anesthesia Management
- Intensive Care Unit Support
- Diagnostic Imaging Assistance
- Companion Animal Ward Care
- Specialty Services (Neurology, Oncology, etc.)
- Large Animal Ward Support
- Small Animal Surgical Assistance
The primary responsibilities include:
- Enhancing client engagement through exceptional service delivery
- Coordinating patient care and effectively communicating with various service areas regarding patient status and care procedures
- Maintaining comprehensive and accurate medical records while ensuring patient confidentiality
- Monitoring and assessing patient health, administering prescribed medications and treatments, collecting samples, and assisting with patient restraint
- Preparing patients for surgical procedures, including site preparation using aseptic techniques, and organizing surgical suites with necessary equipment
- Assisting clinicians during surgical procedures and monitoring patients for vital sign changes
- Providing technical support and guidance to veterinary students, graduate students, clinicians, and staff
Required Qualifications:
- 2-year College Diploma
- Completion of an accredited Veterinary Technician program recognized by the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT)
- Full membership in good standing with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT)
- Successful completion of the Veterinary Technician Examination (VTNE) and the OAVT mandatory ethics exam
- Minimum one year of prior experience as an RVT
- Proven customer service skills with excellent communication and organizational abilities, particularly in client interactions
- Familiarity with common computer software, including Hospital Management Information System software, is preferred
- Flexibility in scheduling is essential, with the ability to work various shifts, including evenings and weekends
- For those applying for the Large Animal Ward position, experience in handling and restraining large animals, along with proficiency in a variety of treatment procedures, is required.
Compensation: Hourly rate ranges from $28.00 to $31.29.
