The Outdoor Product Design Specialist plays a crucial role within a dedicated team of design experts who share a love for outdoor activities. You will be driven by cutting-edge design principles and understand that aesthetics, functionality, and durability are essential in crafting exceptional products. Under the guidance of senior team members and in collaboration with various departments, you will develop concepts and production-ready design strategies tailored to our customers' needs. Following the directives outlined in design briefs, you will initiate and analyze research to generate innovative product ideas that resonate with our consumers. As a designer, your focus will be on creating products across all Canadian Tire outdoor recreation brand labels, including Woods, Outbound, Huntshield, Yukon Gear, and Helly Hansen, spanning categories such as backpacks, lighting, tents, sleeping bags, and camping accessories.
You will be adept at both generating new ideas and enhancing established concepts. Your ability to convey product ideas through sketches, visual renderings, and detailed specifications will be key. You will utilize colors, patterns, textures, and imagery to effectively communicate the brand's core identity. Your attention to detail will shine in a dynamic environment where timely and budget-conscious project delivery is paramount.
• Collaborate with broader business team members to ensure project milestones are achieved on schedule and within budget. Integrate insights from global market trends, construction methods, materials, colors, and category requirements to deliver market-ready products. Participate in selected trade shows for market insights and attend sales meetings to gain a comprehensive understanding of customer and product needs. Conduct thorough assessments of the competitive landscape to design equipment that is brand-appropriate and reflects a deep understanding of the target audience.
Qualifications
A proactive passion for the outdoors and related equipment, with experience in the Outdoor Sporting Goods sector being a significant advantage. A recognized degree in Industrial Design or a related discipline. A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a product design capacity. Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop); experience with 3D modeling is highly desirable. Strong proficiency in MS Office applications. Familiarity with PLM (Product Line Management) tools. Understanding of common manufacturing processes, including cut-and-sew, screen printing, embroidery, injection and compression molding, and high-frequency welding. A collaborative mindset, working closely with Sourcing, Product Management, and Brand Marketing to generate innovative and commercially viable product concepts. A comprehensive understanding of the design, development, and merchandising process from concept to production. A proactive and enthusiastic approach to fostering innovative thinking from product conception to final execution. Strong presentation and communication skills, capable of articulating and selling ideas to all organizational levels and customers, conveying a clear and inspiring vision. Ability to communicate and negotiate timelines effectively in both verbal and written forms within a multicultural environment. Demonstrated collaboration, interpersonal influence, and teamwork skills, maintaining effective communication and relationships. Results-oriented with a high level of energy and resourcefulness. A self-starter who brings enthusiasm and focus to every project. Exceptional project planning, organizational, and time management skills, with a keen attention to detail.
