Located within the Electrical Division, the Quality Assurance Inspector will report directly to the Manufacturing Manager of the Quality Department. This role involves the inspection and testing of bus duct, low and medium voltage motor control systems, as well as low and medium voltage switchgear and PCR/E-Houses. The QA Inspector will also conduct tests for Powell clients and their representatives during customer inspections.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee electrical operations in the shop and perform visual inspections.
  • Conduct inspections and tests on all equipment produced at Powell facilities in accordance with established standards.
  • Execute Skid Inspections to identify any structural, dimensional, visual welding, and paint defects based on customer specifications.
  • Install, program, and operate electronic devices such as relays, OBR, PLCs, and HMIs.
  • Power up all Powell Electrical Products and other purchased equipment following safety protocols and pre-commissioning checks, including Transformers, Service Panels, HVAC systems, Battery Chargers, and UPS Systems.
  • Investigate equipment failures and perform root cause analyses.
  • Carry out all inspection activities with minimal supervision.
  • Ensure that the latest revisions of quality documents are accessible and utilized during work.
  • Maintain and complete all necessary Quality Control documentation.
  • Perform maintenance and calibration on testing equipment as required.
  • Identify and issue non-conformance reports to the Manufacturing Manager, utilizing various measuring and testing methods, and assist in determining appropriate corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with all departments (shop, engineering, sales, shipping, fabrication, PCR, switchgear) and customers to resolve quality-related issues.
  • Engage with all departments during production, final inspection, and release to shipping.
  • Maintain external relationships with other Powell subsidiaries and customers.
  • Coordinate with customers and QC inspectors to resolve shop issues and facilitate Factory Acceptance Tests.
  • Document engineering and shop discrepancies and shortages.
  • Actively participate in continuous process improvement and cost control, adhering to quality policies and standards.
  • Organize and implement quality control systems and processes, providing feedback to the Manufacturing Manager.
  • Foster a culture of safety and attend all safety meetings.
  • Ensure quality by following standard work instructions and identifying potential risks to product quality.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering, BS Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent (Journeyman Electrician Trade Ticket is an asset).
  • 0-3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with test equipment such as multimeters, clamp-on meters, voltage detectors, and Hi-Pot testers.
  • Basic computer skills, particularly with MS Office products.
  • Intermediate experience with industry codes and standards.
  • Basic knowledge of Electrical Theory and relevant Mechanical experience.
  • Ability to read technical documents including specification sheets, wiring diagrams, schematics, and part drawings.
  • Knowledge of policies and the ability to write and administer them consistently.
  • Safety training certificates are advantageous for this position.
  • Successful candidates will undergo pre-employment substance abuse and medical testing due to the safety-sensitive nature of this role.

Working Conditions

  • Safety-sensitive position in a temperature-controlled manufacturing or industrial environment with occasional outdoor activities.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment at all times when necessary.
  • Desk and computer work in an office environment is required.
  • Must be able to work from various types of ladders and scaffolding.
  • Working at heights typically does not exceed 30 feet using appropriate lift equipment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to maintain balance and agility to prevent falls while walking, standing, crouching, or using stairs.
  • Frequent bending, extending arms, and repetitive movements.
  • Continuous standing and walking for extended periods with occasional sitting.
  • Frequent stair climbing throughout the shift.
  • Ability to look over shoulders and work with arms above shoulders regularly.
  • Capability to exert force continuously up to 50 lbs.
  • Proficient in using hand tools and power tools for extended periods.
