Position Overview:

The role involves providing essential support for instructional activities, acting as a community representative, coordinating facility operations, and managing financial records and sales.

Instructional Support Responsibilities:

  • Ensure tools and equipment are maintained and operational for departmental use.
  • Create and uphold a secure learning atmosphere by implementing safety protocols and conducting inspections.
  • Demonstrate proper use of tools and equipment while supervising students.
  • Assist the instructional team in delivering program curriculum effectively.
  • Oversee and guide student activities, providing feedback on behavior.
  • Serve as the primary first aid responder on site.
  • Collaborate with faculty on classroom and laboratory materials.
  • Plan and procure necessary supplies and tools for the program.
  • Manage the sourcing, pricing, ordering, and delivery of supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure adequate stock of supplies for student and faculty utilization.
  • Support field trips by managing fees, travel arrangements, and participating in transportation as needed.
  • Engage in departmental and institutional committee meetings.

Community Engagement Duties:

  • Provide professional reception services to students and the public, both in person and via phone.
  • Facilitate the use of program facilities by external groups.
  • Assist in student recruitment by welcoming applicants and guiding them to the program chair.
  • Collaborate with faculty to enhance program marketing, facility tours, and promotional events.
  • Aid faculty and students in building and maintaining industry connections for student employment opportunities.
  • Support events organized by the G.R. Paine Center, including meetings and workshops.
  • Participate in professional development activities relevant to the field.

Facility Management Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and manage the greenhouse environment, addressing system alerts and coordinating necessary repairs.
  • Implement pest control measures in collaboration with faculty and students.
  • Oversee the maintenance of program equipment, growing facilities, and the G.R. Paine Center landscape.
  • Communicate with Facility Services regarding janitorial, plumbing, electrical, and heating needs.
  • Organize waste and recycling collection.
  • Order drinking and irrigation water as needed.
  • Coordinate with Health and Safety to report incidents related to safety and security.
  • Manage security protocols, including key handling and electronic access controls.

Financial Management and Sales Duties:

  • Oversee the sale of crops and products generated by students, including payment processing and record keeping.
  • Supervise student involvement in marketing and sales as part of their learning experience.
  • Establish and maintain organized filing systems for records.
  • Handle financial transactions and reconciliations using the institution's financial systems.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Regularly update the administrative area and departmental website with current information.

Required Qualifications:

  • Red Seal Horticulturalist or Diploma in Horticulture with a minimum of five years of relevant experience.
  • Provincial Pesticide Applicators License.
  • First Aid Certification, Level One.
  • Experience in landscape maintenance and installation.
  • Experience managing greenhouse operations.
  • Proficient in using common landscape tools and machinery.
  • Relevant work experience in horticulture, preferably in a supervisory capacity.
  • Valid BC Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Physical fitness to perform moderate physical tasks with occasional heavy activity.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Class 4 Driver's License.
