About the Role

Rio Tinto is seeking a highly skilled Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador. As a key member of our geotechnical team, you will be responsible for providing geotechnical support to our mining operations, ensuring the safe and efficient extraction of iron ore.

Key Responsibilities
  • Proactively manage geotechnical risk and hazard identification
  • Communicate effectively with operational and site technical services teams
  • Train staff on hazard identification and controls
  • Provide geotechnical input to mine designs and planning processes
  • Interpret slope monitoring and dump performance data
  • Assist with monitoring system deployment and installations
  • Ensure geotechnical instrumentation is maintained and operational
  • Geotechnical drill core logging and field mapping
  • Assist with pit slope and waste dump designs
  • Manage geotechnical projects to support design implementation
Requirements
  • Recognised tertiary qualification in Geological, Geotechnical, Mining, or Civil Engineering, or equivalent
  • Eligibility for professional designation (or with Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL)
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in a geotechnical role, preferably in an open pit mining environment
  • Experience with slope monitoring equipment and computer programs
  • A valid driver's license
