Role Overview:

Reporting to the Senior Manager – Line Maintenance, this position is dedicated to supporting the front-line Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) by providing structured guidance and consistent oversight to ensure smooth daily operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise maintenance staff to confirm that the necessary skills and equipment are available for all tasks within the Aircraft Maintenance Organization (AMO) scope, and inform the Senior Manager of any shortcomings;
  • Ensure that maintenance personnel utilize the correct tools and technical documentation while maintaining a clean working environment;
  • Facilitate maintenance and parts requests by collaborating with Maintenance Control, Technical Representatives, and various support teams to minimize scheduling disruptions during Irregular Operations (IROPS) and both planned and unplanned maintenance;
  • Uphold the Corporate Safety Promise and Standards at all times;
  • Ensure that defects are rectified and scheduled maintenance tasks are executed promptly and satisfactorily, adhering to WestJet policies and procedural guidelines;
  • Coordinate and manage both planned and unplanned maintenance activities with Planning, Maintenance Control Center (MCC), Engineering, and Stores, ensuring adequate staffing to prioritize maintenance actions on aircraft/components;
  • Expedite maintenance and parts needs while liaising with other departments and teams to ensure minimal impact on schedules during IROPS and scheduled/unscheduled work;
  • Maintain personnel work schedules from the day of operations to a minimum of three months ahead to guarantee sufficient coverage for all maintenance activities at the base;
  • Collaborate with other Operations Managers, Out Base Managers, and MCC to address staffing requirements within the base and beyond as necessary;
  • Participate in hiring processes and performance evaluations (both probationary and annual) to ensure appropriate staffing and skill levels within the team;
  • Ensure all maintenance personnel receive the required initial and ongoing company and technical training;
  • Provide daily leadership, guidance, coaching, and performance development to a team of AMEs, fostering an effective, positive, and respectful maintenance environment;
  • Identify performance and personnel issues, taking timely and effective action in consultation with the HR Business Partner and Senior Leadership Team as needed;
  • Make personnel decisions (e.g., unfit for duty) and address significant policy or procedure violations immediately;
  • Ensure that all teams and stakeholders involved in daily operations are informed of any operational risks (e.g., maintenance concerns, safety or quality issues, resource deficiencies) and understand the available options through appropriate communication channels;
  • Report any significant operational concerns to the Senior Manager and collaborate as a team to resolve them promptly;
  • Advise the Senior Manager - Line Maintenance of any resource and training needs to support maintenance activities at the highest standard;
  • Be accountable for all Quality Control responsibilities for all work performed, rectifying and reporting any quality escapes through the appropriate systems and informing the Senior Manager;
  • Undertake Materials duties if Materials personnel are unavailable;
  • Ensure that hangars, workshops, equipment, and offices are kept in an operational, clean, and safe condition, with any identified issues reported and mitigated immediately;
  • Execute all duties with the utmost safety in mind and report any conditions or processes that may negatively impact safety;
  • Uphold the Company's best interests, as outlined in the company code of conduct;
  • Complete a maintenance release as specified in the Maintenance Policy Manual;
  • Participate in or lead Regulatory or Company committees/meetings relevant to the Base/Operation;
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Possess a valid Transport Canada Aircraft Maintenance Engineer License (M2, E, or S);
  • Hold an Industry Canada Radio (Aeronautical) Certificate within six months of accepting the position;
  • Capable of holding ACA and completing a maintenance release as defined in the Maintenance Policy Manual;
  • Demonstrate sufficient knowledge and experience of industry practices and understand the responsibilities associated with the role;
  • Ability to self-manage and work shifts;
  • Proven track record of building relationships at all levels and with various departments/groups;
  • Proactive and responsive in addressing business needs;
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining effective employee relations, including the ability to provide feedback and recognition based on performance;
  • Proven ability to coach, mentor, and motivate team members using exceptional interpersonal skills;
  • Exhibit outstanding personal operational performance;
  • Serve as a positive role model, visibly demonstrating WestJet values;
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Proficient in MS Office applications including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
