Role Summary

The Application Specialist is a vital member of the Digital Software Services (DSS) team at UHN. This role involves collaborating with various stakeholders to support a range of clinical and operational applications. The Application Specialist is instrumental in aligning business requirements with technological solutions, particularly within the LIS department. Key responsibilities include providing exceptional customer service, managing incidents, conducting system and business analysis, facilitating system upgrades, and engaging in process improvement initiatives.

The Application Specialist works closely with business stakeholders and subject matter experts to ensure optimal system performance and reliability. Responsibilities include gathering and analyzing clinical workflows and business processes, configuring systems accordingly, and documenting policies and procedures to enhance user engagement and communication with external vendors.

This role demands a combination of technical expertise, effective communication skills, and a commitment to delivering superior support to enhance application functionality and meet organizational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain comprehensive knowledge of supported applications. Provide ongoing support, including resolving complex issues. Assist end users with application-related challenges, including on-call support. Facilitate the creation and upkeep of internal projects, training materials, and documentation. Coordinate various testing phases (user acceptance, application, performance, stress, regression, and integration) for system updates. Participate in the design, development, testing, validation, and maintenance of LIS systems and related systems. Manage servers and databases for supported applications as needed. Utilize expertise in applications and query languages to generate reports for management and clinical staff. Address system workflow issues and guide the implementation of necessary changes. Collaborate with management and team members to ensure high-quality customer service. Resolve operational and system issues with management to promote efficiency. Communicate with external software vendors to maintain functional requirements. Contribute to the development and refinement of policies and procedures. Create training resources and documentation to support application usage. Provide training to end users and facilitate established meetings. Document system issues and resolutions for future reference. Maintain technical documentation, including system diagrams. Participate in an on-call support roster.

Required Qualifications

Undergraduate Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Health Informatics, or a related field. Completion of a Medical Laboratory Technologist Diploma program or equivalent is preferred. Certification in Epic Beaker is required. Additional Epic module certifications are advantageous. Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (CMLTO) is preferred. 2-3 years of experience in second-level application support is required. 1-2 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technologist is preferred. Familiarity with HL7 standards and interfaces is an asset. Understanding of relational database management systems. Experience with Oracle and MS SQL databases and Windows server operating systems. Proficient in software tools such as Visio, Microsoft Project, Excel, Word, and SharePoint. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and recommend solutions. Experience with clinical systems and processes in a healthcare setting is required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize effectively. A willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
