The Mental Health Community Specialist (MHCS) is a professional dedicated to delivering comprehensive psychosocial evaluations, consultations, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions to individuals referred to the mental health program for various psychological challenges. By employing therapeutic techniques that enhance and leverage individual strengths, the MHCS aids clients and their families in achieving greater autonomy, accountability, and fosters overall wellness, community involvement, and social equity.
As part of the Child and Adolescent program, the MHCS collaborates within an integrated team framework, engaging in mental health clinical practices that encompass consultation, assessment, therapeutic strategies, and evidence-supported treatments. The MHCS focusing on Child and Adolescent care must possess a broad and in-depth understanding of trauma-informed psychiatric practices and other recognized mental health therapies, along with the capability to implement crisis management and suicide prevention strategies effectively. The MHCS will work in partnership with primary healthcare providers, specialists, families, and relevant agencies involved in the care of children and adolescents.
Services are grounded in the principles of recovery, empowerment, self-determination, and accountability, forming part of a comprehensive mental health service continuum. Clinicians operate within a collaborative care model, providing time-sensitive, goal-oriented, and change-focused interventions or consultations based on informed consent and voluntary participation, tailored to individual capacities. The MHCS is expected to demonstrate initiative and independent judgment in prioritizing tasks, selecting work methods, and addressing atypical situations. The Mental Health Community Specialist will function within the full scope of practice, engaging in continuous education to maintain competency in alignment with organizational policies, professional standards, and ethical guidelines.
Qualifications- Graduation from an accredited post-secondary program in Health-Related Social Sciences (e.g., BSW, BScMH, OT, MACP, BScPN, BN, RPN). Other relevant educational backgrounds and experiences may be considered.
- A Master's degree is an asset - qualified as a Psychiatric Nurse, Occupational Therapist (MOT), Clinical Social Worker (MSW), Family Therapist (MFT), or equivalent.
- Active license and registration to practice as mandated by professional associations and provincial regulations.
- Certification in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST).
- A minimum of two (2) years' experience delivering evidence-based therapy to adults; 3-5 years preferred.
- Training and demonstrated expertise in clinical assessment, case formulation, psychotropic medications, and individual/group/family/systemic interventions.
- Experience and training in trauma-informed care and Brief Treatment models, including CBT and DBT.
- Experience in providing mental health services to adults or children and adolescents, particularly those with severe mental health issues.
- Proficiency in conducting psychosocial assessments and mental status evaluations.
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development and mental health issues, including suicide risk assessment and management.
- Respect for and promotion of cultural diversity within the community.
- Proficiency in both official languages is essential for designated bilingual positions.
- Ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the role.
- Commitment to confidentiality across various formats.
- Demonstrated good work and attendance record.
- A valid Class 5 driver's license, an all-purpose insured vehicle, and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.00 are required.
