Job Summary:

Volker Stevin Contracting is seeking a skilled Asphalt Screed Operator to join our paving crew. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for operating the free-floating asphalt screed, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the equipment, and maintaining a high level of quality in our work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate the free-floating asphalt screed in a safe and controlled manner, adhering to all safety protocols and procedures.
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment to ensure optimal performance and prevent downtime.
  • Monitor and control the distribution of asphalt mix to achieve uniformity and meet specified compacted mat thickness and cross section requirements.
  • Ensure proper depth application of asphalt on the screed using manual and automatic grade controls.
  • Set up, employ, and disassemble automatic grade controls as required.
  • Adjust the placement of asphalt, measure the width and thickness, and determine the application rate to achieve optimal results.
  • Control the thickness of the mat by tilting the screed forward to lower the depth and tilting it backwards to increase the depth.
  • Set end gates and auger up asphalt to fill the screed.
  • Observe the terrain ahead of the paver and adjust the screed to factor in dips and variations in the base to achieve level and consistent asphalt surfaces.
  • Preheat the screed to hot mix asphalt temperature to prevent sticking and tearing in the mat.
  • Coordinate with fellow paving crew personnel to plan and execute project paving procedures and goals.
  • Train new employees on the safe and efficient operation of the screed.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Class 5 Driver's License; clean Driver's Abstract.
  • Valid Class 5 Operator's License; clean Driver Abstract.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in asphalt raking on a paving crew.
  • Proficient understanding of asphalt and raking techniques.
  • Knowledge of paving construction methods, asphalt and road construction materials, heavy equipment operation, and industry requirements.
  • Ability to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs regularly.
  • Willingness to work out of town and in remote locations, as required.
  • Willingness to work overtime, as required.
