Job Title: Full Time Day Program Instructor with Caseload

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Day Program Instructor to join our team at The Salvation Army. As a key member of our staff, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as a role model and advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities, promoting their independence and self-advocacy.
  • Manage a caseload of individuals, creating personalized support protocols and ensuring completion of medical assessments and reports.
  • Foster independence in daily living skills, including social skills, life skills, and community participation.
  • Provide support in personal development, as decided through individual program planning (ISP).
  • Ensure the safety and health care of individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Teach and support Enrichment Program participants.
  • Document and maintain records as required, including data collection and medication administration.
  • Administer medication as needed.
  • Develop and implement learning opportunities using agency and community resources.
  • Maintain effective communication with colleagues, stakeholders, and individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Participate in monthly planning and contribute to the preparation of the monthly program calendar.
  • Provide orientation and support to family members, volunteers, and new staff.
  • Support and guide colleagues, placement students, and volunteers in their roles.
  • Represent The Salvation Army and its participants on committees and at meetings as delegated.
Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, and bodily waste.
  • Noisy environments.
  • Dealing with angry and abusive individuals.
  • Handling garbage and odors.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and apply effective body mechanics.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • Completed 2-3 year Developmental Services Worker Diploma or equivalent degree/diploma related to human services.
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate with CPR, Level C.
  • Ability to achieve Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certificate upon hire.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and a current copy of a Driver's abstract for review and verification.
Experience and Knowledge:
  • Preferred minimum 2-5 years' experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges.
  • Experience with case management or prime worker role and responsibilities.
  • Experience with implementing and updating Individual Support Plans (ISP).
  • Experience in community outreach and medication administration.
  • Training and/or experience in personal care and supporting individuals with ambulates, mobilizers, and transfers.
Skills and Capabilities:
  • Strong counselling and de-escalation skills.
  • Teaching skills, including implementing various teaching approaches and group instructor skills.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office and email programs.
  • Ability to successfully complete all mandatory training as required by The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully.
