Coffee Specialist - AMS Cafe

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) serves the University of British Columbia's (UBC) student community, enhancing the academic, social, and personal experiences of its 56,000 students. The AMS operates multiple food and beverage establishments, a catering service, and the AMS Student Nest, creating on-campus job opportunities and generating revenue that directly supports UBC students.

Position Title: Coffee Specialist

Department: Food & Beverage Services

Reports to: Outlet Supervisor

Supervises: None

Employment Status: Permanent, full-time

Compensation: $18.00 per hour

Position Objective:

The Coffee Specialist is responsible for crafting an exceptional coffee experience by delivering outstanding customer service through efficient and high-quality beverage and food preparation. This role fosters a collaborative environment by embodying the mission and values of the AMS. Training opportunities are available for candidates who demonstrate natural aptitude, enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic.

Key Responsibilities

Crafting a variety of beverages, including espresso-based drinks and specialty options Ensuring quality control by accurately measuring ingredients for different serving sizes and maintaining optimal milk texture and temperature Overseeing the maintenance and quality assurance of espresso equipment, including machines and grinders, to guarantee consistency Regularly calibrating and adjusting the espresso brew log for optimal results Delivering exceptional customer service throughout the beverage preparation process Collaborating effectively with the entire food and beverage team Training new staff members at the coffee station Upholding cleanliness and organization at the coffee bar by performing routine cleaning and waste disposal Demonstrating knowledge of product shelf life by monitoring inventory and ensuring proper rotation Ensuring timely delivery of beverages to customers Maintaining the condiment station for customer convenience Performing additional duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills

Previous experience in a coffee preparation role is preferred but not mandatory Capable of lifting heavy items Ability to communicate clearly and positively with customers Capacity to work effectively under pressure Strong teamwork skills, collaborating with up to two other coffee specialists
