Québec, Quebec, Canada MD Financial Management Full time

Is this position the right fit for you?

In this role, you will:

  • Oversee the estate and trust services for MD Financial Management clients, ensuring an exceptional client experience, enhancing awareness, and creating client-facing materials and resources.
  • Conduct research and provide expert knowledge in estate and trust planning to MD advisors, financial planners, and specialists. This involves collaborating with National Leads, Team Leads, and Directors to offer guidance, technical coaching, and training to relevant personnel.
  • Enhance the delivery of MD's offerings by integrating estate and trust planning expertise into financial planning content for clients. This includes addressing inquiries, writing insights, and, on occasion, participating in client meetings where advanced estate and trust planning knowledge is necessary.
  • Evaluate the implications of changes in estate, trust, and tax legislation on planning strategies, services, and products, providing recommendations to ensure compliance with applicable laws.
  • Create and nurture a high-performance, client-centric, team-oriented environment that attracts, retains, and develops talent while focusing on deepening client relationships and leveraging broader MD and Scotiabank resources.
  • Promote MD's advanced estate and trust planning capabilities through marketing initiatives, public relations events, thought leadership content, and by building and maintaining relationships with external legal and tax professionals.
  • Manage risks associated with estate and trust planning, particularly regarding the potential misinterpretation of insights as legal advice. Collaborate closely with other experts within MD's Wealth Strategy Team and the organization to ensure a unified approach to estate and trust planning issues.
  • Actively participate as a member of the MD team, engaging in various internal committees focused on policies and processes related to estate and trust planning and coordination with other business lines.
  • Ensure compliance with professional standards, including policies, procedures, best practices, and codes of conduct related to client engagement, considering Scotiabank's risk appetite and culture in daily activities and decisions.

The Essential Qualifications:

  • Member in good standing with the "Chambre des notaires du Québec" or the "Quebec Bar Association".
  • Demonstrated experience in the estate and trust sector, including knowledge of the regulatory landscape.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the competitive estate and trust market, including products, companies, taxation, and marketing strategies.
  • In-depth knowledge of estate and trust law, including relevant Quebec Civil law, to address complex issues and provide guidance to MD staff and clients.
  • Proven track record of collaboration with notaries, lawyers, advisors, and other trust professionals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly in public speaking and presentations.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and travel as needed.
  • Fluency in both French and English is essential.
  • A commitment to lead by example, fostering a growth mindset, initiative, integrity, and authentic relationship-building skills.
  • An appreciation for delivering an exceptional client experience, quickly understanding client needs and providing timely, accurate responses to estate planning inquiries.
  • A sense of urgency in prioritizing client needs and ensuring timely execution of tasks.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a broader team to provide optimal client service and align objectives with long-term goals.
  • A readiness to embrace change, thriving in a dynamic environment with shifting priorities and tight deadlines.
  • A dedication to continuous learning, staying informed about provincial laws, regulations, and trends in the estate and trust planning industry, and using this knowledge to enhance awareness through educational initiatives.
  • A natural coaching ability, motivating others to achieve critical business objectives and navigate through periods of significant change.

Education and Certification:

  • University degree in Common Law, with the capability to support Common Law provinces.
  • Relevant industry accreditation (e.g., Canadian Securities Commission, IQPF diploma, Certified Financial Planner, Personal Financial Planner).
  • Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) designation (TEP) or equivalent.
  • Diploma or master's degree in taxation.

Do you possess the skills necessary for success in this role? We would be eager to collaborate with you if you have:

  • Strong presentation skills, particularly in financial matters, with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly and effectively.
  • The capacity to work both independently and as part of an interdependent team, excelling in a modern, flexible work environment.
  • Proven experience in building and maintaining effective working relationships with clients, peers, advisors, leadership, and senior management.
  • Exceptional time management and prioritization skills, capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.

"In accordance with the language needs assessment conducted by Scotiabank, the selected individual must be able to communicate in English, in addition to French, as they will closely collaborate with other corporate groups primarily working in English."
