Position: Student Support Officer

Employment Type: Temporary

Compensation: Competitive hourly rate

Location: Henlow Campus

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, approximately 35 hours per week*

The Industry Training & Continuing Education (ITCE) department is committed to developing and delivering innovative programs that align with industry demands and student needs. Through micro-credentials and tailored training solutions, we collaborate with industry partners to facilitate career pathways that address the evolving labor market.

The Student Support Officer plays a vital role in assisting students enrolled in MITT's ITCE certificate programs. This position involves providing comprehensive support in academic, personal, financial, and career-related matters to both current and prospective students. The Officer acts as a mentor, guiding students through MITT's policies and procedures while fostering their independence and problem-solving abilities. As part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary team, the Student Support Officer must demonstrate empathy, innovative thinking, and a strong understanding of institutional policies while managing sensitive situations to enhance the overall student experience.

*Standard working hours are typically 35 hours per week, with variations during specific periods.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to support ITCE students effectively.
  • Guide students in understanding MITT policies and their responsibilities.
  • Assist students in enhancing their learning skills, including study techniques and time management.
  • Provide advice on academic and personal challenges, promoting independent decision-making.
  • Refer students to appropriate internal or external resources as needed.
  • Work with instructors to monitor student progress and identify those at risk academically.
  • Support students transitioning out of their programs, ensuring effective communication throughout the process.
  • Advocate for students facing challenges and assist them in navigating support systems.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Facilitate students' transition into full-time post-secondary education in Canada.
  • Collaborate with program administration to develop best practices for student support.
  • Engage with the ITCE program delivery team to stay informed about current practices.
  • Refer students to Career and Employment Services as appropriate.
  • Participate in planning Student Orientation activities to foster early relationships with students.
  • Connect with students during Work Integrated Learning (WIL) to address transition needs.
  • Build a network of community resources and support services for students.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities relevant to the role.
  • Assist in the daily administration of academic programming and student communications.
  • Attend departmental meetings and participate in institutional activities as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

A combination of relevant education and experience is preferred.

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field such as education, social work, or counseling.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a teaching or mentoring role.
  • Experience working with international students or newcomers to Canada is essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a post-secondary educational environment.
  • Experience working with adult learners.
  • Previous role as an Academic or Student Advisor.
  • Mental Health First Aid and CPR/First Aid certifications are advantageous.
  • Other relevant mental health intervention certifications are a plus.

Employment Conditions:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record check is required.
