BACKGROUND
The BC Non-Profit Housing Association (BCNPHA) plays a pivotal role in guiding and supporting its members to uphold high standards of affordable housing across British Columbia. The association primarily serves non-profit housing providers, alongside individuals and organizations committed to the cause of affordable housing. The Asset Management Department is dedicated to delivering Energy Management and Capital Planning services aimed at minimizing operational expenses, extending the lifespan of existing housing, and expanding the housing stock to address increasing demand.
The Asset Management Department is seeking a qualified individual to fill the role of Building Energy Specialist. This full-time position is essential for assisting the department in fulfilling its mission to support the non-profit housing sector.
BCNPHA acts as the umbrella organization for non-profit housing providers in British Columbia, offering services, educational opportunities, events, and advocacy for over 800 non-profit housing societies that collectively manage more than 60,000 units of affordable housing across over 2,000 locations in the province.
POSITION SUMMARY
This role encompasses technical services and project coordination focused on energy assessments and building retrofits. The specialist will provide guidance to non-profit housing societies, primarily in the Lower Mainland, navigating various funding programs from Provincial (BC Housing, Clean BC), Utility, and Federal sources, including initiatives related to Low-Carbon Electrification, while supporting BCNPHA's mission to enhance and sustain the non-profit housing sector.
Key Responsibilities
Program/Services Support:
- Conduct benchmarking for non-profit buildings.
- Collect and analyze energy data to deliver insights and analyses to contracted engineers, non-profit housing societies, and other stakeholders.
- Ensure quality assurance, troubleshoot issues, and provide follow-up as necessary.
- Assist with data integration into Energy Star Portfolio Manager and BCNPHA databases.
- Support sector-wide building benchmarking initiatives.
- Analyze data for developing business cases, estimating retrofits, and assessing project feasibility.
- Perform Energy Audits.
- Travel to sites or conduct virtual assessments to gather building system information, identify energy conservation opportunities, and prepare reports.
- Coordinate outreach and site visits across the province, managing appointments, accommodations, travel, and expense reporting.
- Guide non-profits through building retrofit initiatives.
- Oversee retrofit projects for non-profit societies, collaborating with staff, board members, consultants, contractors, utility companies, and various funding organizations.
- Provide technical assistance to non-profit housing providers in identifying, planning, and executing capital and energy efficiency retrofits, with a focus on potential low-carbon electrification projects.
Data Management:
Assist in identifying and pursuing opportunities to enhance BCNPHA databases with relevant data.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Experience, and Skills
- Proficient understanding of energy analysis, energy conservation strategies, building construction, and energy systems is essential.
- Familiarity with building control systems, building envelope design, low-carbon electrification, and relevant rebate programs is a significant advantage.
- Post-secondary education in a related field is required.
- A graduate degree, such as a Master's in sustainability and planning, BCIT SEMAC certificate, UBC Master's in Clean Energy, or Douglas BERM certificate, would be beneficial.
- Prior experience in energy benchmarking is advantageous.
- A solid understanding of non-profit organizations and their operations is preferred.
- Ability to effectively gather, analyze, and synthesize complex information.
- Strong problem-solving capabilities, both independently and collaboratively.
- Adaptability to changing conditions, with effective communication of changes and progress.
- Proactive in identifying process improvements and developing innovative solutions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ensuring timely and appropriate interactions with staff and partners.
- Proficient in computer applications (MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and database management.
- Experience in creating presentations and visually representing data is highly valued.
- A valid driver's license is required.
Compensation & Working Conditions
