Deputy Director, Hamilton-Wenham Public Library

The Deputy Director plays a pivotal role in supporting the Director with the strategic planning, organization, and management of the library's operations, programs, collections, and services. This position also oversees staff scheduling and manages daily library functions in the Director's absence, addressing various operational challenges as they arise.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Oversee daily staffing operations; create a weekly staff schedule utilizing online scheduling tools; manage coverage for absences due to illness or personal matters.
  2. Assist in the procurement of library resources by assessing community needs and selecting appropriate materials while engaging in collection assessment and maintenance initiatives.
  3. Collaborate with the Director to strategize and implement innovative technology systems and projects.
  4. Support the Director in long-term planning, goal establishment, and policy formulation related to library services, personnel management, and facility operations; contribute to administrative tasks and special projects as needed.
  5. Lead the recruitment and assignment of library personnel; partake in the training of new staff members.
  6. Act as a coordinator for volunteers, responsible for recruiting, selecting, scheduling, training, supervising, and evaluating adult library volunteers.
  7. Provide assistance in the Reference, Circulation, and Children's Departments as required, aiding department heads in optimizing workflows.
  8. Demonstrate leadership in achieving library objectives by engaging with professional literature, attending relevant workshops and meetings, facilitating group activities, and exemplifying exceptional customer service.
Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in library services, including at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Familiarity with contemporary and emerging library technologies, trends, and practices, alongside a comprehensive understanding of library principles.
  • Proficient in teaching and troubleshooting a diverse array of technologies and software, including computers, office machinery, automated library systems, audiovisual tools, copiers, printers, scanners, and mobile devices.
  • Strong management, planning, and supervisory abilities, with a capacity to work collaboratively within a team to further the library's objectives.
  • Skilled in fostering and maintaining positive working relationships with various stakeholders, including library trustees, staff, patrons, community organization representatives, volunteers, vendors, and municipal officials.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
