Role Overview

The Outdoor Product Design Specialist plays a crucial role within a dynamic team of design experts who share a deep passion for outdoor activities. Guided by senior team members and collaborating with various departments, you will develop concepts and production-ready design strategies tailored to our customer base. Following the guidelines outlined in design briefs, you will initiate and analyze research to generate innovative product ideas that resonate with our consumers. Your focus will be on creating products across all Canadian Tire Corporation outdoor recreation brands, including Woods, Outbound, Huntshield, Yukon Gear, and Helly Hansen, covering categories such as backpacks, lighting, tents, sleeping bags, and camping accessories.
You will excel in both generating new ideas and enhancing established concepts. As a product designer, you will articulate product concepts through sketches, visual renderings, and detailed technical specifications. Utilizing color, patterns, textures, and imagery, you will effectively convey the brand's core identity. Your attention to detail will be paramount as you thrive in a fast-paced environment where design projects are executed on schedule and within budget.

Responsible for developing products that align with brand standards, ensuring that designs fulfill all specifications and objectives as outlined by the product team through collaborative presentations and sample evaluations with stakeholders and manufacturing partners. Successfully achieve seasonal product development targets and deliverables by managing the timeline of product creation in accordance with the product development calendar. Foster strong relationships with manufacturing partners, product teams, and other cross-functional collaborators through effective communication and necessary site visits to manufacturing facilities. Ensure that all new initiatives and existing mainline products are designed to meet and surpass cost targets and financial goals.
• Collaborate with broader business team members to ensure project deliverables are met on time and within budget. Integrate insights from global market trends, construction methods, materials, fabrics, colors, and category requirements to deliver market-ready products. Participate in selected trade shows for market insights and attend sales meetings to gain a comprehensive understanding of customer and product needs. Accurately evaluate the competitive market landscape to design equipment that is brand-appropriate and reflects an understanding of the target audience.

Qualifications

A proactive interest in outdoor activities and related equipment, with experience in the Outdoor Sporting Goods sector being a significant advantage. An accredited degree in Industrial Design or a related discipline. A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a product design capacity. Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop); additional 3D modeling skills are highly desirable. Strong command of MS Office applications. Familiarity with PLM (Product Line Management) tools. Understanding of common manufacturing processes including cut-and-sew, screen printing, embroidery, injection and compression molding, and high-frequency welding. A collaborative team player who works closely with Sourcing, Product Management, and Brand Marketing to develop innovative and commercially viable product concepts. A comprehensive understanding of the design, development, and merchandising process from inception to production. A proactive and enthusiastic approach to fostering innovative thinking from product concept to final execution. The ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams to achieve business objectives while maintaining humility. Strong presentation and communication skills, capable of conveying a clear and inspiring vision to all organizational levels and customers. Proficient in articulating and negotiating timelines verbally and in writing within a multicultural context. Demonstrated collaboration, interpersonal influence, and teamwork abilities, maintaining effective communication and relationships. Results-oriented with a high level of energy and resourcefulness.
