About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate individual to join our team as a Food Program Kitchen Assistant at Directions Youth Services Centre. As a key member of our kitchen team, you will play a vital role in supporting the delivery of effective and accessible pantry and kitchen programs for Centre youth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the planning, preparation, and serving of healthy, low-cost meals to Centre youth.
  • Work collaboratively with the Food Program Supervisor, kitchen staff, and volunteers to ensure the smooth operation of the kitchen.
  • Build positive relationships with youth who access the drop-in centre, promoting a sense of community and connection.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records of volunteers and report concerns to the Food Program Supervisor.
  • Oversee the sorting and storing of food donations, and support kitchen volunteers in doing the same.
  • Take a leadership role in managing emergency and crisis situations, employing non-violent crisis prevention and intervention strategies as needed.
  • Maintain appropriate notes, statistics, logs, and report critical incidents that occur while on shift.
Requirements
  • Grade 12, plus one-year post-secondary education.
  • Food Safe certificate.
  • Current First Aid Certificate and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training an asset.
  • Two-years of related experience in a commercial or community kitchen.
  • One-year experience working with youth, preferably in support of youth who use substances, face mental health challenges, and/or are unhoused.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.
