Position Overview:

This role entails providing essential support to the poultry veterinary practice, which includes responsibilities that necessitate the designation of Registered Veterinary Technologist. Key duties involve the management and dispensing of veterinary pharmaceuticals, alongside assisting with various operational tasks within the poultry veterinary sector. This position does not require weekend availability.


In addition, the role encompasses supporting the broader Maple Leaf Ag-Ops Division through tasks such as sample submissions, liaising with diagnostic laboratories, overseeing vaccine inventory, and generating purchase orders within the SAP system. Coordination of vaccination protocols, blood sampling, and interdepartmental collaboration with producers are also integral components of this position. Participation in cross-departmental projects, including monitoring plant condemnations and collecting samples from farms, is expected.


Daily Responsibilities:
  • Dispense antimicrobials and other veterinary medications in compliance with ABVMA standards.
  • Maintain comprehensive veterinary records according to ABVMA guidelines.
  • Ensure adherence to veterinary practice regulations set by ABVMA.
  • Conduct in-house projects related to poultry diagnostics and sample monitoring.
  • Organize and coordinate sampling schedules for various poultry farms.
  • Act as Biological Safety Officer for the poultry laboratory.
  • Execute laboratory tests and manage results within the Laboratory Information Management System.
  • Oversee Quality Management protocols.
  • Assist the Veterinarian with necropsy procedures.
  • Manage biological waste disposal and maintain cleanliness in hazardous areas.
  • Keep accurate records for samples and reports.
  • Handle shipping of samples and creation of laboratory submissions.
  • Prepare sample kits in an aseptic manner.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and execute SAP transactions as required.
  • Support the preparation of prescriptions and schedule farm visits.
  • Assist with quality assurance programs and biosecurity measures.
  • Contribute to data entry and analysis, including pathogen and performance results.
  • Participate in sampling and environmental monitoring in poultry facilities as needed.
  • Provide training and verification of sampling procedures when necessary.
  • Document meeting notes for distribution to the team.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Must be registered or eligible for registration as a Registered Veterinary Technologist in Alberta.
  • 1-2 years of experience in the food animal sector is preferred.
  • Significant experience in poultry production (over 5 years) may be considered in lieu of registration.

Essential Skills and Knowledge:
  • Experience in veterinary practice.
  • Laboratory experience, particularly in Microbiology.
  • Ability to analyze results and propose continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Background in continuous improvement and performance enhancement.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively.
