Job Summary

Island Health is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Physician Associate to join our Emergency Department team. As a Physician Associate, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the success of our organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assessment and Treatment: Assess and treat all emergency department patient presentations, including history and physical, medical orders, certification under the Mental Health Act, consultation with other services, and response to changing patient condition.
  • Diagnostic and Procedural Skills: Order and follow up on diagnostics, complete disposition and discharge planning, and perform procedures within the scope of your demonstrated competence, including procedures involved in diagnosis and treatment of all acute illnesses.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Communicate effectively and expeditiously with the ED Attending for significant changes in patient medical status, function as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team, and communicate effectively with patients, families, and caregivers in a culturally sensitive and compassionate manner.
  • Quality Improvement and Professional Development: Participate in Emergency Department quality improvement initiatives, participate in standardized reporting, evaluation, and professional development activities as required by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia and Island Health.
Requirements
  • Education and Training: Must have completed a Physician Associate program and be licensed to practice in the province of British Columbia.
  • Skills and Abilities: Proficient English communication skills, effective and efficient computer and written communication skills, ability to work in a team-based environment, and physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
Assessment and Probationary Period

During a 12-week probationary period, you will undergo assessment and evaluation of your competence to perform the duties in the intended specialty areas under a Medical Leader. The evaluation will include assessment of basic clinical skills, communication skills, ability and willingness to function as a member of a clinical team, specialized knowledge and skills applicable to the intended clinical placement, clinical decision-making, and clinical documentation.
