Recreational Therapist for High-Security Facilities

Location: Coquitlam, BC

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients' recreational capabilities to identify programming needs. This involves utilizing various assessment tools, interviewing patients, reviewing health records, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to determine strengths and therapeutic requirements.
  • Design and implement both individual and group therapeutic recreation programs. This includes creating actionable plans that define objectives and strategies, coordinating with community resources, ensuring the availability of necessary equipment, and adapting programs based on patient progress.
  • Ensure the safety and security of recreation therapy services. This involves verifying patient security clearances, monitoring attendance, managing equipment accountability, and observing patient behavior to address any safety concerns promptly.
  • Maintain detailed records of patient assessments and progress in accordance with organizational policies. This includes writing accurate reports for case managers and participating in review boards as necessary.
  • Engage in community collaboration to enhance recreation therapy treatment. This includes attending interdisciplinary meetings, providing feedback on community resource integration, and liaising with nursing staff regarding patient safety and treatment.

Qualifications and Skills

Required:

  • Diploma in Recreation Therapy from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience in a psychiatric environment, particularly with individuals facing complex mental health and addiction challenges.
  • Valid BC Drivers License, with the potential for local travel.

Desired Skills:

  • Comprehensive understanding of recreation therapy principles within a patient-centered care model.
  • Strong ability to develop, implement, and evaluate therapeutic recreation initiatives.
