Role Overview

As a Recreation Therapist, you will be responsible for assessing, planning, and implementing therapeutic recreation interventions tailored to meet the unique needs of clients facing complex mental health and substance use challenges. Your role will involve:

  • Conducting comprehensive Recreation Therapy assessments and developing individualized treatment plans that align with evidence-based practices and client-centered goals.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to design and deliver engaging Recreation Therapy services, ensuring that activities cater to the diverse interests and needs of clients.
  • Supervising and coordinating the activities of staff and volunteers, providing guidance and support to ensure effective service delivery and adherence to safety standards.
  • Creating and managing recreation programs that foster community involvement and enhance the quality of life for clients, while promoting inclusivity and participation.
  • Staying informed about advancements in Recreation Therapy and related fields, facilitating continuous learning, and contributing to the development of best practices within the organization.

Qualifications and Skills

To be successful in this role, you should possess:

  • A diploma in Recreation Therapy from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience working with populations experiencing mental health and substance use issues.
  • Eligibility for membership in the British Columbia Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA).
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to travel locally as required.

  • In-depth knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care and cultural safety principles.
