About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Medical Department Head to join our team at Nova Scotia Health Authority. As a key member of our leadership team, you will play a critical role in providing strategic and operational planning and service leadership for our hospital medicine department.

Responsibilities
  • Administrative Functioning: You will be responsible for the administrative functioning of the department, including holding regular department meetings and providing meeting minutes to the Zone Medical Executive Director.
  • Service Continuity: You will work with Hospitalist Site Leads, Medical Site Leads, and operational leadership to ensure service continuity is maintained through the department and key patient flow objectives are met.
  • Quality and Safety: You will advise the Zone Medical Advisory Committee on the quality of care and treatment provided to patients, and participate in developing, reporting on, and overseeing the department's objectives, planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and utilization.
  • Physician Resource Management: You will make recommendations on physician resource needs of the department, including the number and type of physicians needed, after consulting with the Zone Medical Executive Director, the VP Medicine, and the Medical Site Leads.
  • Access and Flow: You will work with the co-lead to develop and implement a plan focused on improving access and flow for the zone, including community hospitals and cross-facility transfers.
  • Professional Standards: You will ensure the continual maintenance and enforcement of professional standards within the department and implement quality assurance and improvement within the zone department.
  • Medical Staff Issues: You will address and resolve medical staff issues, including those involving respectful workplace and interpersonal matters, and oversee complaint and discipline management for all department members.
Qualifications
  • MD, licensable in Nova Scotia
  • 3-5 years' experience as a medical department member with experience engaging, mentoring, and empowering teams and stakeholders in a collaborative, participative manner
