The City of Vancouver is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Sustainability Specialist to join our Planning, Urban Design & Sustainability team. As a key member of our team, you will play a lead role in the development and implementation of the City's Climate Adaptation Strategy and Climate Emergency Action Plan.
Key Responsibilities- Lead complex projects to develop new policies, regulations, programs, or other new initiatives to advance the Sustainability Group's mission.
- Facilitate inter-departmental cooperation, build strategic external partnerships, and mobilize support to ensure the implementation of components of the City's Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Climate Emergency Action Plan.
- Develop business cases and in-depth policies to support the City's sustainability goals.
- Conduct best practice research and analysis to inform decision-making.
- Design and implement stakeholder and public engagement processes to ensure community involvement and buy-in.
- Advance decolonization and equity in all aspects of the role.
- Foster strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Manage consultant teams and contracts to ensure successful project delivery.
- University graduation, preferably with a post-graduate degree in planning, environmental science, engineering, or a related field, and a minimum of two years professional experience in the sustainability field, preferably supplemented by supervisory experience.
- Considerable sustainability-related professional experience in project management, developing and implementing complex and innovative public engagement initiatives, and leading high-level multi-stakeholder processes is preferred.
- Considerable knowledge of climate change adaptation, particularly with knowledge of local climate projections and adaptation priorities.
- Knowledge of government structure and the authority/regulatory tools available to different levels of government.
- Good knowledge of decolonization and operationalizing equity.
- Ability to manage or coach other staff.
- Ability to communicate ideas and make recommendations to governmental officials.
- Ability to organize and co-ordinate projects.
