Job Overview

What can you anticipate in this position?

  • Collaborating with various departments within the organization to evaluate, draft, interpret, and negotiate a wide range of agreements, including but not limited to templates, non-disclosure agreements, licenses, professional services, marketing contracts, corporate services, and lease agreements, as well as SaaS and other cloud-based service agreements.
  • Assessing and interpreting diverse legal matters related to the operations of a property and casualty insurance firm, providing guidance to a variety of operational units on legal concerns, regulatory adherence, intellectual property, and strategies for negotiation and contract management.
  • Engaging with other members of the Legal department and serving as a primary source of expertise to offer sound legal advice and ensure consistency in Definity's approach to vendor and third-party partnerships.
  • Contributing to the ongoing enhancement of our contracting processes and legal risk management systems.
  • Offering support for strategic initiatives as necessary.

What qualifications do you bring to this position?

  • Juris Doctor or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed to practice law in Ontario by the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Minimum of 3 years of post-call experience in drafting and negotiating legal agreements, including strategic partnerships, vendor contracts, goods and services agreements, software licenses, service level agreements, and technology-related offerings. Experience in technology transactions, particularly in data privacy and security, is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with the insurance sector or other financial institutions is beneficial.
  • Exceptional communication, research, and drafting abilities, with a knack for engaging with business partners effectively.
  • Strong judgment and capability to navigate complex issues while safeguarding confidential information.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage multiple, sometimes competing priorities.
  • Commitment to fostering robust business relationships.
  • High standards of professionalism and integrity.
  • Self-motivated individual with a positive attitude.
