Job Title: Indigenous Student Support Specialist
Job Summary:
The Indigenous Student Support Specialist will contribute to the support for Mikmaw and other Indigenous students to ensure improved achievement and a positive school experience. The Specialist will develop strategies to help students achieve success, support School Principals on initiatives which address student achievement for Mikmaw and other Indigenous students, and work with School Principals and staff in developing effective communication links for Mikmaw and other Indigenous youth and their families.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement strategies to support Mikmaw and other Indigenous students in achieving academic success
- Collaborate with School Principals and staff to develop effective communication links with Mikmaw and other Indigenous youth and their families
- Support School Principals on initiatives which address student achievement for Mikmaw and other Indigenous students
- Work with the Regional Coordinator of Mikmaw Education/Services to develop and implement programs to support Mikmaw and other Indigenous students
- Provide targeted support to youth to help them achieve their academic and personal goals
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in social sciences or Social Work, or combination of work experience, life skills training, and training in working with students
- Experience working with Indigenous students and communities through approaches which enhance the greatness, strengths, and abilities of Indigenous students
- Minimum three (3) years demonstrated experience providing targeted support to youth
- Experience with case management and/or record keeping considered an asset
Working Conditions:
The Indigenous Student Support Specialist will work in a school setting, providing support to Mikmaw and other Indigenous students. The Specialist will work collaboratively with School Principals, staff, and the Regional Coordinator of Mikmaw Education/Services to develop and implement programs to support Mikmaw and other Indigenous students.
Salary and Benefits:
The starting annual salary is $41,268.31 paid across 12 months for working a 10-month school year. Student Support Specialists are paid every two weeks. Salary is based on a six (6) step scale with step increases occurring annually in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
