Reports To: VP, Chief Underwriter

Employment Type: Permanent Full-Time

Work Structure: This role offers a hybrid work arrangement. You will be required to work in our office a minimum of two (2) assigned, consecutive days every other week, along with an additional fifth (5th) assigned day each month. You are encouraged to work from the office more frequently if desired, and some roles may necessitate a higher in-office presence.

About the Role: Equitable is expanding and we are seeking an Underwriting Manager to guide our team of Individual Underwriters. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the leading employers in the Waterloo Area and Southwestern Ontario.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough technical risk evaluations for individual life and critical illness insurance.
  • Oversee ongoing underwriting workflows and workload distribution, setting individual and team objectives, managing processes, and developing team members.
  • Recruit, nurture, and retain a cohesive and motivated team, assessing individual and team performance through annual evaluations.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to team members and implement the annual performance and talent review process.
  • Focus on continuous improvement, balancing quality and efficiency in underwriting.
  • Establish relationships with key brokerage firms and internal distribution partners, guiding the team to do the same.
  • Collaborate with leaders in underwriting and Individual Insurance to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Ensure clear and timely communication with the underwriting team, leadership, and both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage and support cross-functional initiatives that align with departmental, divisional, and corporate goals.

Qualifications:

  • College or University degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Individual Insurance with demonstrated underwriting expertise.
  • In-depth knowledge of individual products, underwriting policies, procedures, workflows, and administrative systems.
  • Proven leadership and employee development skills.
  • Ability to negotiate and excel in a cross-functional environment.
  • Understanding of the complexities within the Individual marketplace and competition.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to share knowledge effectively in a team setting.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while regularly consulting with the Chief Underwriter.
  • Proactive, service-oriented, and results-driven with a sense of urgency.
  • FLMI / FALU designation or currently pursuing.
