About the Role:
Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV) has been a cornerstone in providing vital resources for children, families, and individuals for over 90 years. Our commitment lies in empowering the resilience of at-risk youth, particularly those who are homeless or involved in street life. We offer essential support to individuals under 25 years old who may be grappling with trauma, mental health issues, or substance use challenges.
Our After Hours program is dedicated to assisting youth who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless within a 24-hour support environment. The Overnight Youth Support Specialist role is a crucial hourly position focused on providing a safe and supportive atmosphere for youth who are unhoused, precariously housed, or facing various crises.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct intake assessments for new clients, determining their suitability for our programs and making necessary referrals.
- Identify and address the individual needs of youth accessing our services, offering support, education, and advocacy in areas such as crisis intervention and harm reduction.
- Utilize non-violent crisis intervention techniques and provide first aid as needed.
- Maintain accurate records, statistics, and logs of incidents in a professional manner.
- A minimum of six months of post-secondary education focusing on homelessness, mental health, or social services, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least two years removed from experiences of homelessness or related life challenges; lived experience is an asset.
- Understanding of substance use, mental health issues, and the principles of harm reduction.
- Familiarity with community resources and the systemic impacts of colonization.
- Ability to manage conflict effectively and apply behavioral management techniques.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check.
- Proof of Covid-19 vaccination status is required.
