About the Opportunity

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a Food Service Worker to join our team in the patient and retail food service setting. As a Food Service Worker, you will work under the supervision of the Manager/Food Service Supervisor and be responsible for preparing and serving meals and supplies to patients, residents, veterans, staff, families, and customers. You will also be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing patient trays, related equipment, and workplaces, while supporting safe food handling procedures and providing overall service excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and serve patient meals, including assembling, portioning, and serving meals, as well as preparing "mix & serve" menu items.
  • Deliver and distribute selective menus and patient meals, as well as deliver nourishments and supplies.
  • Collect soiled patient trays and maintain a clean and sanitized work environment.
  • Participate in receiving and storing supplies, using First In First Out (FIFO) procedures.
  • Receive and interpret patient diet/meal orders, confirm patient meal requirements, and maintain inventory management.
  • Generate and print menus, reports, tallies, and labels, as well as print Meditech/STAR reports and compare to CBORD/Vision reports.
  • Clean and sanitize dishes, utensils, equipment, and work areas, while maintaining basic work area safety and sanitation.
About You

We are looking for a candidate who has a Grade 12/GED or equivalent, or demonstrated skills and/or relevant work experience. Restaurant experience and customer service skills are considered assets. You must be able to work as part of a team to provide services and achieve departmental and/or organizational goals, perform duties within expected timeframes and standards of accuracy, and communicate effectively while demonstrating civility and respect. Competencies in other languages, particularly French, are an asset.

Working Conditions

The Food Service Worker will work in a fast-paced environment with frequent physical demands, including extensive standing and walking, bending, lifting (maximum of 35-40lbs), pulling, and pushing, as well as transferring/transporting equipment. Special footwear may be required for some food service areas, and heavy lifting may be required in the Pot Room.

Hours and Compensation

The position is a permanent part-time/90% FTE/67.5 hours bi-weekly, with a compensation rate of $20.02 hourly.
