Job Summary

As a key member of the Finance team, the Payroll Manager plays a vital role in ensuring the accurate and timely processing of payroll for approximately 5,000 employees across various departments and locations. Reporting directly to the Controller, Financial Services, this individual will lead a team of four staff members while maintaining strict controls over sensitive payroll data.

Key Responsibilities
  • Payroll Processing & Reporting: Oversee the bi-weekly processing of payroll for all employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant legislation and internal policies. Generate comprehensive payroll reports for management review.
  • Team Leadership & Development: Provide guidance, coaching, and performance feedback to a team of payroll professionals. Set clear goals and objectives, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
  • Financial Reporting & Analysis: Prepare monthly journal entries related to payroll activities and complete account reconciliations. Conduct ad hoc analysis and reporting to support management decision-making.
  • Compliance & Audit Management: Ensure adherence to all applicable federal, provincial, and internal regulations governing payroll practices. Lead annual audits with external auditors and conduct internal department audits to identify areas for improvement.
  • System Maintenance & Implementation: Manage the implementation, testing, and maintenance of payroll systems and related software applications. Develop and maintain documentation for payroll processes and procedures.
  • Training & Process Improvement: Provide organizational-wide training on payroll policies and procedures. Identify opportunities for process improvement and lead cross-functional projects to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation (or equivalent) and a minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in payroll management within a complex organization. A strong understanding of financial reporting principles and proficiency in ERP systems are essential. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills are required to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
