About the Position:

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Animal Care Specialist to join our team at the BC SPCA. As a key member of our shelter operations, you will be responsible for ensuring the optimal levels of care are administered to the animals in our facility.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assume a leadership role in designated areas of the shelter, including dogs, cats, and cruelty investigations.
  • Oversee the activities of animal care attendants and volunteers, ensuring proper procedures are followed and training is provided.
  • Maintain clear communication with staff and volunteers regarding day-to-day operations and tasks.
  • Ensure the physical plant is clean, sanitary, and efficient, and that kennels, runs, and cat cages are maintained to the highest standards.
  • Monitor the health and welfare of animals through regular checks and record-keeping.
  • Treat animals humanely and with compassion, and ensure their health and well-being are maintained in accordance with BC SPCA policies and procedures.
  • Perform welfare and temperament assessments, and conduct preliminary cruelty investigations as required.
  • Act as an ambassador of the BC SPCA, providing excellent customer service and representing the organization in a professional and positive manner.
  • Assist with adoptions, redemptions, and intake of animals, and ensure all procedures are conducted according to policy and procedure.
  • Support and implement BC SPCA provincial initiatives and adhere to all operational policies and procedures.
  • Assist in local and provincial fund-raising initiatives.
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver's license.
  • Sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics, and common diseases.
  • Previous kennel or animal care experience is an asset.
  • Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare.
  • Ability to work with other staff, volunteers, and the public in a positive and practical manner.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills sufficient to deal effectively with front desk duties.
  • Position is physically demanding and requires an individual with the ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance.
  • Minimum of one year animal care experience with the BC SPCA or related agency is preferred.
