Therapeutic Recreation Specialist

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist is accountable to the Supervisor of Program & Support Services for the effective execution of therapeutic programming, recreational therapy, spiritual care, and additional support services. This role is essential in ensuring that an exceptional standard of Resident programming is consistently upheld and improved, aligning with the policies of Simcoe County and relevant legislation. As a dedicated member of Long Term Care and Seniors Services, the Recreation Specialist is committed to promoting resident safety by delivering high-quality care in line with the organization's mission and vision.
CONTRACT DURATION
Anticipated contract length: 12-18 months, or as extended.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Evaluate, plan, implement, and assess resident programming utilizing best practices across all five domains to meet the unique needs of each resident.
2. Effectively communicate with all members of the interdisciplinary team and community partners.
3. Conduct resident admission assessments and care plans on a quarterly, annual, and as-needed basis. Maintain daily attendance statistics and participate in additional meetings and documentation as required.
4. Engage in and demonstrate an understanding of resident safety principles and practices in daily activities. Adhere to all safe work practices and promptly report any actions that may pose a risk to resident safety.
5. Collaborate as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team, fostering effective and cooperative relationships with all departments.
6. Support the activities of the resident's council, volunteers, and students as necessary.
7. Participate in committees as needed.
8. Perform additional duties as assigned.
9. Comply with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Long Term Care Homes Act, along with their regulations, ensuring safe practices in all duties and adhering to all health and safety policies and procedures.
10. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Personal Health Information Protection Act.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies, Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology, or a related field from a recognized institution; or
- Currently enrolled in a diploma or degree program (as mentioned above) that will be completed within three years of employment.
- Ontario Smart Serve certificate, or must obtain within six months of hire.
- Maintain certification in AIS testing.
- Maintain Food Handlers Certification (Proton).
- Gentle Persuasive Approach Certification preferred.
- Montessori Methods for Dementia training preferred.
- A valid Ontario 'G' class driver's license and a clean driver's abstract are required.
- A valid Ontario 'F' driver's license is required, or must be obtained within six months of hire.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficiency in word-processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening that is less than six months old at the time of hire.
- As a condition of employment, candidates must submit documented results of TB testing as per Public Health requirements.
- Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset.
- Understanding individual needs and providing compassionate support to families.
EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of 1 year of experience as an Activationist or Recreation Therapist is preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Some physical effort is required in this role, including pushing, pulling, and lifting while assisting residents and conducting activities.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
- Exposure to infectious diseases, body substances/fluids, and frequent physical contact for lifts and assists.
- Work schedule to be determined; shifts may include days, evenings, and weekends.
