About the Role

**Job Summary**

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Area Safety Manager to join our team at First Student. As a key member of our safety team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees and passengers.

Key Responsibilities
  • **Collaborate with Regional Safety Directors, Location Managers, and Maintenance Managers** to develop and implement safety protocols and procedures.
  • **Identify and address safety concerns** at underperforming locations, working with location teams to develop and implement continuous improvement processes.
  • **Conduct comprehensive incident investigations** for all serious events, developing actions and ensuring lessons learned are communicated and implemented.
  • **Share best practices and innovative approaches** for problem-solving with locations managed by the position.
  • **Provide support to Regional Safety Directors and Risk Management** on claims management and litigation.
  • **Complete Root Cause Analysis** with operations and maintenance as required.
  • **Work closely with workers' compensation third-party administrators** to proactively manage claims.
  • **Ensure proper driving trainer staffing levels**, working closely with operations and HR to identify trainer needs and administer driver onboarding.
  • **Assist locations in determining and implementing remedial actions** for safety events and review disciplinary actions with HR and Operations.
  • **Provide multiple location oversight**, guiding locations on compliance with First Student policies and SOPs, as well as applicable laws and regulations.
  • **Prepare monthly reports and safety performance analysis** for locations, identifying trends and corrective actions and communicating to AGM and management team.
  • **Assess location safety performance** using Daily Dispatch, Driver Mobile Manager, and other applicable tools.
  • **Participate in the recruiting process** for selection and onboarding of new Location Managers and Safety Managers.
  • **Provide safety training** for new Location Managers and Safety Managers, developing competencies and skills and supporting Regional train-the-trainer workshops.
  • **Ensure operational efficiencies** at a location level using Focus, Zonar, and the Safety Care database.
  • **Perform location Safety Wellness Checks** at least annually, with more frequent inspections and safety reviews at high-risk locations.
  • **Assist HR and Location Managers** with driver recruitment, retention, and training activities.
  • **Supplement the site safety review process** by conducting safety audits, working with locations and RVPs/AGMs to properly close Site Safety Review actions.
  • **Manage the BeSafe process**, including Safety Leadership course delivery, identifying and onboarding BeSafe Coaches, and monitoring debrief quality.
  • **Work with RVP, AGM, and Location Managers** regarding the communication and execution of division-wide activities and actions.
  • **Provide technical oversight** to Location Managers, as needed, prioritizing requests from Location Managers and supporting the Operations and Safety function.
  • **Verify location compliance** with PDDP, EDTP, Non-Conforming Vehicles standards, and conduct quality assurance by auditing elements of training programs.
  • **Ensure all Training Standards** are carried out per Company guidelines.
  • **Support the execution of kickoff/safety meetings** by working closely with location staff.
  • **Provide startup support** as needed.
Requirements
  • **7 years of safety/transportation experience**
  • **5 years of experience in fleet transportation management**
  • **Strong commitment to safety**
  • **Demonstrate leadership, decision-making, and team-building skills**
  • **Strong proficiency in computer literacy**, including Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • **Experience with other software**, such as timekeeping and payroll systems, is preferred
  • **Advanced skills in technology** used to manage operations, including but not limited to FGA-approved Smart technology, Apps, encrypted drives, shared drives, and other Smart technology
  • **Strong verbal and written communication skills**
  • **Ability to interpret data and perform root cause analysis**
  • **Ability to work in a fast-paced environment** with others in a team setting
  • **Demonstrated ability to train, coach, and provide leadership**
  • **Collision Investigation training**
  • **State/Provincial Instructor Certification** in at least one of the States/Provincial in the Region
  • **Certified Smith System Defensive Driving Instructor**
