Position Overview

The Senior Traffic Engineer will play a pivotal role within the Transportation team, collaborating closely with fellow senior engineers to oversee project delivery from planning through to design, tendering, and construction phases. While the primary focus will be on Traffic Engineering projects, responsibilities may also extend to transportation infrastructure design initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the preparation and evaluation of signal timing calculations and simulations.
  • Direct the development and assessment of signal phasing and operations for various travel modes, including provisions for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Lead the design and review of traffic signal systems.
  • Prepare and review essential design documentation and project deliverables, including reports, drawings, cost estimates, and construction specifications.
  • Conduct commissioning services and site inspections.
  • Manage system testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of traffic controllers and related devices.
  • Act as a liaison with clients and manage project-related activities.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior and intermediate staff members.
  • Prepare proposals, contract plans, specifications, and estimates for tender submissions.
  • Support business development initiatives.

Technical Areas of Focus

  • Roadway, pedestrian, and multi-user pathway lighting design.
  • Traffic signal infrastructure development.
  • Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) integration.
  • Power distribution systems.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) with the appropriate regulatory body.
  • Proficient in traffic simulation and modeling, particularly using Synchro.
  • Experience in traffic engineering and signal timing development.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Willingness to learn and maintain a positive, professional demeanor.
  • Proficient technical writing skills for reports and specifications.
  • Experience collaborating with consultants and contractors.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, fostering the development of team members.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly with the MS Office suite.
  • Capability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Able to manage a high level of responsibility and a demanding workload.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
  • Experience with local municipalities or provincial transportation projects.
  • Familiarity with exterior lighting systems design and Intelligent Transportation Systems is advantageous.
  • Experience in Traffic Controller programming and commissioning.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, AGI, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is beneficial.
  • Understanding of the Canadian Electrical Code is a plus.
