Job Title: Staff Lawyer - Indigenous Justice Specialist Job Summary: The BC First Nations Justice Council is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Staff Lawyer to join our team. As a Staff Lawyer, you will play a critical role in providing legal representation to Indigenous clients facing criminal charges and child protection matters. Your expertise will help reduce the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system and support Nations in their journey towards sovereignty over justice. Key Responsibilities: * Provide legal representation to Indigenous clients in criminal and child protection matters * Advocate for diversion of legal matters from the formal court system to less intrusive measures * Work with the Resource and Support Worker to provide wrap-around services to clients * Develop and maintain working relationships with Indigenous communities and service providers * Collaborate with Indigenous, local, provincial, and federal government agencies and service providers to ensure clients have access to culturally safe and Indigenized programs and services Requirements: * Membership in a Canadian Law Society, preferably British Columbia * J.D. / LL.B. degree; Advanced degrees and/or Joint J.D./J.I.D. considered an asset * 1-5 years' litigation experience in criminal defense; exposure to MCFD (child welfare) matters an asset * Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures * Ability to provide a culturally safe environment for clients * Knowledge of the structure and procedures of Canada's Criminal Justice System and British Columbia's child protection system What We Offer: * Competitive salary range: $90,000 - $150,000 * Extended benefits package, including health and dental, personal days, paid vacation, and RRSP/TFSA savings plans * Opportunity to work with a dedicated team committed to reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system How to Apply: If you are a motivated and dedicated lawyer with a passion for Indigenous justice, please submit your application, including your resume and cover letter, to [insert contact information].
