Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada Horizon Health Network Full time

Horizon Health Network is excited to announce the expansion of our Midwifery program and is looking for skilled midwives, whether seasoned or newly qualified, to become part of our dedicated team. We are currently recruiting for a permanent part-time and casual midwife, with additional opportunities anticipated in the near future.

We are in search of individuals who are passionate about developing a practice that provides comprehensive primary maternity care in partnership with our healthcare professionals. Midwives at Horizon are employed with a salary by the regional health authority, ensuring integration into the clinical program for maternal and newborn care. Since 2017, a community-based clinic has been established to support a practice group of four midwives, which includes coverage for necessary overhead costs such as equipment, supplies, and support staff.

Core Values

We prioritize patient and family-centered care, excellence in practice, and teamwork. Midwives operate as autonomous healthcare professionals within a multidisciplinary primary health care team, delivering maternal and newborn services within designated geographical areas.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a recognized Canadian university midwifery education program or an equivalent qualification as per the New Brunswick Midwifery Act and Regulations.
  • Eligibility for registration with the Midwifery Council of New Brunswick.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
  • Consistent attendance and ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
  • Strong work history and commitment to professional integrity.
  • Willingness to undergo a criminal record check and vulnerable sector record check as a condition of employment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver care aligned with the philosophy and ethics of midwifery practice in Canada, adhering to community care standards and the New Brunswick code of ethics.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • Gather comprehensive health histories, including medical and psychosocial information.
  • Oversee the care, assessment, and monitoring of women during normal pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period, along with their healthy newborns.
  • Manage low-risk, spontaneous vaginal deliveries.
  • Work with clients to create, implement, and assess individualized care plans, including determining the appropriate birth setting.
  • Engage in counseling, education, and clinical care as part of your duties.
  • Provide healthcare services in clients' homes, communities, and within hospital and clinic settings.
  • Offer on-call coverage during days, nights, and holidays as scheduled in collaboration with the midwifery team.
  • Consult with, refer to, or transfer care to other medical practitioners as necessary, following Midwifery Council of New Brunswick regulations.
  • Maintain respectful and clear communication with other healthcare providers and support staff, ensuring thorough documentation of all client interactions and care plans.
  • Prescribe, order, and administer medications in accordance with provincial regulations and standards.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic tests, and provide additional healthcare services within the standards of practice.
  • Participate in various regional and local committees, representing the midwifery profession with dignity and integrity.
  • Perform related and allied duties as assigned to support the operation of the service.

Competencies

  • Health and Well-being: Promote wellness in pregnant clients, babies, and families, considering the social, emotional, cultural, and physical aspects of reproductive experiences.
  • Informed Choice: Support clients in making informed decisions about their care by providing complete, relevant, and objective information.
  • Autonomous Care Providers: Take full responsibility for delivering primary health services within the scope of practice, making independent decisions in collaboration with clients.
  • Continuity of Care: Build trusting relationships and provide individualized care throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and up to six weeks postpartum.
  • Choice of Birth Setting: Respect clients' rights to choose their birth setting and provide competent care in various environments.
  • Evidence-based Practice: Stay informed about current research on maternity care and incorporate relevant findings into practice.

Employees are expected to be familiar with and understand Horizon's Terms of Employment.
