Job Summary

This position plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive legal services to the City of Saskatoon. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing in-house legal services to the City, including City Council, Committees of Council, the Administration, and the City's Boards in various areas such as Litigation, Municipal Law, Planning and Administrative Law, Employment Law, Prosecutions, Real Estate, Construction Law, and Corporate Law.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide legal advice and representation to the City in civil litigation, administrative law matters, and prosecutions at all levels of court and before various Administrative Tribunals.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement policies and processes relating to legal matters.
  • Coordinate with Divisions to identify and implement legal solutions to serve the business needs of the Divisions.
  • Provide leadership and communication to assist Divisions in identifying solutions and achieving strategic objectives and goals.
  • Provide legal advice to Divisions to promote continuous improvement at the City of Saskatoon.
  • Perform a complete range of municipal and corporate legal services, including bylaw enforcement, labour law, contracts, planning and development law, litigation, and legislative drafting.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Degree from an accredited school of law.
  • Membership, or eligibility for membership, in the Law Society of Saskatchewan.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives of providing legal services to a municipal corporation would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of applicable Provincial legislation and regulations pertaining to municipal bylaws and a municipal corporation would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and manage conflicts in a positive and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to make clear decisions in a prompt and consistent manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise a high degree of confidentiality and trust.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, the legal industry, various professionals, and civic officials.
  • Ability to work as a member of an office team with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal courteously, tactfully, and effectively with customers.
  • Demonstrated research and presentation skills.
  • Skill in analyzing, evaluating, and organizing facts, evidence, and precedents; and in devising solutions to legal problems unique to municipal government.

The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced environment with a high level of autonomy. The position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

What We Offer

The City of Saskatoon offers a competitive salary range of $85,052.88 to $111,430.80 CAD per annum (2022 rates). We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision coverage, as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
