Civil Engineer II Position

Main Purpose and Function

The City of Vancouver is seeking a highly skilled Civil Engineer II to join our Engineering Services team. This senior-level position will work on solid waste policy, planning, and operating/capital programs and projects with a focus on landfill gas (LFG) management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and recommend practical, cost-effective strategic and long-range plans for LFG management.
  • Lead external funding program applications, reporting, and design and construction of works by external parties.
  • Provide leadership, direction, supervision, and guidance to staff, including assigning responsibilities, prioritizing and reviewing work, and coaching and mentoring.
  • Manage contracts for complex and technical projects at the Landfill and Transfer Station.
  • Oversee and assess metrics/trends/recommendations brought forward by junior staff for reasonableness and completeness.
  • Collaborate on cross-departmental projects/initiatives and strengthen relationships with various internal and external stakeholders.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary degree in Applied Science or Engineering (Civil or Environmental preferred) and a minimum of 6 years' experience in the fields of municipal solid waste management, LFG/environmental monitoring, occupational hygiene, program and policy development, and project management.

Registration as a Professional Engineer in BC is required. Previous experience supervising staff is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of municipal solid waste landfills and operation of LFG collection and utilization systems.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety programs, policies, and regulations relating to municipal solid waste management and specifically LFG.
  • Technical and financial analytical knowledge and skills.
  • Proficient with data management and word processing software.
  • Program and policy development and implementation experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply Project Management methodologies and tools to projects for successful completion.
