Job Title: Dental Hygienist

Join the City of Toronto team as a Dental Hygienist and contribute to the delivery of high-quality oral health services to our community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide clinical dental preventive services, including topical fluoride application, sealant placement, scaling, polishing, and individual oral hygiene instruction.
  • Conduct dental screenings, maintain records, and take, mount, and screen x-rays.
  • Assign clients to specific services based on assessment of their individual dental needs and advise dentists of complications encountered.
  • Follow infection control protocols and procedures as per IPAC and TPH guidelines.
  • Complete documentation for all services provided, including follow-up of children urgently requiring care, procurement of consent to treatment documentation, maintenance of defect lists, and enrolment of eligible children.
  • Contact parents, guardians, and teachers to obtain and confirm patient information.
  • Teach dental health and prepare teaching aids for dental health instruction in classrooms, day care centres, geriatric institutions, and selected community groups, including those with special needs.
  • Mentor dental hygiene students.
  • Conduct oral assessments in schools or Community Dental Clinics, consult with families, and make appropriate referrals.
  • Facilitate groups and distribute educational material, including the preparation of articles and pamphlets for community information.
  • Conduct screening and dental survey of assigned populations annually.
Requirements:
  • Licensed as a Registered Dental Hygienist by the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario.
  • Considerable experience as a Dental Hygienist in a dental practice.
  • Experience working with children and seniors.
  • Work experience in a hospital setting is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of Abeldent is an asset.
  • Proficiency in clinical management of patients.
  • Excellent knowledge of the principles and practices of dental hygiene.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present educational programs to the public.
  • Ability to work on a multidisciplinary team, with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to give direction and instruction to dental assistants and dental hygiene students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and the general public.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
