Job Summary
Manage the flow of materials through digital preservation workflows. Identify, create, and enhance descriptive metadata, unique identifiers, and resource locators for items undergoing digitization. This includes bibliographic records within library catalogs, repositories, and archival databases as appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
- Review digitization proposals for completeness and collaborate with project sponsors to clarify any details.
- Provide support for copyright investigations and permission requests.
- Prepare materials for digitization, including locating and arranging transportation.
- Develop and maintain metadata workflows in consultation with supervisors and internal stakeholders.
- Create procedural documentation for various activities, such as metadata creation and database operations.
- Utilize diverse interfaces, protocols, and standards to identify and update existing metadata within relevant descriptive metadata schemas. Ensure metadata is comprehensive and accurate to facilitate online discovery by researchers. This includes rare, fragile, disbound, oversized, and other non-standard library resources, ensuring they are handled with care during description and processing.
- Proactively identify potential digitization opportunities and bring them to the supervisor's attention.
- Identify the need for re-cataloging of published materials and arrange their transfer to Collections or other relevant library departments.
- During the description process, identify any items requiring preservation treatment and notify the Library's conservator.
- Create appropriate technical, structural, preservation, and administrative metadata and ensure its proper association with digitized materials in the repository for long-term digital preservation.
- Generate uniform resource locators (URLs) for newly digitized resources.
- Create new call numbers or unique identifier numbers for library and archival resources as needed, applying appropriate classification schemes.
- Develop item titles and item-level descriptions where required for archival materials.
- Provide support for post-production processing of newly digitized materials, such as assisting with OCR (Optical Character Recognition), file compilation, and other tasks.
- Upload preservation and access scans to the repository for local preservation and access.
- Contribute to the development of robust tools for batch uploading preservation and access scans into repositories as systems and processes evolve.
- Offer guidance on metadata to Library staff and other stakeholders.
- Prepare and support the preparation of metadata for contribution to external repositories.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of the integrated library and repository system and test system upgrades pertaining to relevant modules.
- Participate in the investigation, testing, and implementation of new standards, tools, and platforms.
- Identify and apply within the catalog appropriate links to digital versions of digitized items.
- Gather and compile information related to digitization statistics.
- Assist with the preparation of materials for reports or presentations related to digitization efforts.
