Position Overview:

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto is seeking applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a one-year appointment. The anticipated start date is forthcoming.

Research Focus:

The Aspuru-Guzik group is at the forefront of quantum computing algorithm research. The selected candidate will collaborate with principal investigators and a theoretical team to spearhead the design, development, and analysis of innovative quantum algorithms aimed at addressing complex challenges in simulating quantum systems and linear algebra, with an emphasis on practical applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and engage in the design, development, and analysis of groundbreaking quantum algorithms for quantum chemistry, partial differential equations, Hamiltonian simulation, and quantum linear algebra challenges.
  • Investigate and implement new methodologies in quantum computation and quantum software development, adapting procedures as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to assess and enhance quantum algorithms, focusing on performance improvements for diverse applications.
  • Coordinate with collaborators and assist in the compilation, analysis, and presentation of research findings to both internal and external researchers.
  • Prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research outcomes at local, national, and international conferences.
  • Contribute to research proposals for funding agencies and participate in the supervision of students or other trainees.

Throughout the appointment, the individual will be expected to support the overarching research and educational missions of the Aspuru-Guzik group.

Qualifications:

Education: A Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline with a specialization in quantum computing, particularly in quantum algorithms, is required.

Experience: Candidates must possess:

  • 2-3 years of postdoctoral experience in quantum computing, showcasing academic and research excellence.
  • Proven experience in the design and analysis of novel quantum algorithms for both near-term and fault-tolerant quantum computers.
  • Evidence of organizing scientific workshops or seminars in related fields.
  • Strong mathematical skills and expertise in wavelet theory and multi-resolution analysis for quantum chemistry or scientific computation.
  • Demonstrated collaboration with cross-functional teams to optimize quantum algorithms.
  • Experience in writing research proposals and securing external funding.

Skills: Exceptional communication skills in both oral and written English. Ability to work collegially with team members and collaborators. Proficiency in coding with Python and Mathematica, along with experience in utilizing software and libraries for quantum algorithm analysis.

Additional Information: A strong publication record in recognized journals and success in preparing manuscripts, presentations, and scientific abstracts is essential.
