Job Summary:This entry-level position is ideal for individuals eager to learn about scrap metal processing and recycling. The Steel Yard Laborer will assist in various aspects of daily operations, including scrap inspection, sorting, and general yard maintenance. Under the guidance of experienced team members, you'll gain valuable skills and knowledge while contributing to a safe and efficient work environment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:- Adhere to all established safety, environmental, and operational procedures specific to the yard.
- Operate forklifts and progress towards operating loaders and material handlers to assist in loading, unloading, and sorting scrap materials.
- Inspect incoming scrap against quality and environmental standards, eventually progressing to grading and purchasing scrap material.
- Communicate effectively with the scale house or yard inspector to apply deductions for non-conforming materials.
- Perform and document daily Routine Equipment Care (REC).
- Report faulty tools, equipment, environmental hazards, and safety concerns to a supervisor.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and equipment.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Embrace and uphold Gerdau's core values.
- Ensure non-conforming objects, such as gas tanks (drained and removed), propane tanks, and batteries, are removed from incoming scrap vehicles.
- Verify that radioactive materials are removed from inbound/outbound scrap material and properly quarantined.
- Perform general housekeeping duties, including sweeping the shop area and removing garbage.
- Assist in non-ferrous sorting and processing as directed by the non-ferrous operator.
- Contribute to a safe, efficient, and profitable work environment by assisting co-workers with essential operational tasks.
- Actively participate in problem-solving initiatives.
