Job Summary:

The Laborer is an entry-level position that requires no prior experience in scrap metals and recycling. The successful candidate will assist in various aspects of daily operations, including scrap inspection, sortation, and general yard maintenance, under the guidance of experienced personnel.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Follow established safety, environmental, and routine procedures specific to the yard.
  • Operate a forklift and progress towards loader operation and material handler operation to assist in loading, off-loading, and sorting scrap materials.
  • Inspect incoming scrap against quality and environmental standards, with a focus on grading and purchasing scrap materials.
  • Apply deductions to non-conforming materials through effective communication with the scale house or yard inspector.
  • Perform and document daily Routine Equipment Care (REC).
  • Detect and report faulty tools, equipment, environmental hazards, and safety hazards to a supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and equipment.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Promote and practice the core values of Gerdau.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Ensure non-conforming objects are removed from incoming scrap vehicles, such as gas tanks, propane tanks, and batteries.
  • Remove radioactive materials from inbound/outbound scrap material and quarantine them properly.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties, including sweeping the shop area and removing garbage.
  • Assist in non-ferrous sorting and processing as directed by the non-ferrous operator.
  • Support co-workers in general operational duties essential to the yard's safety, efficiency, and profitability.
  • Contribute to problem-solving efforts as required.
