Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Nova Scotia Full time
Economic Geologist - Mineral Resources Specialist

Competition #: 43500

Department: Natural Resources & Renewables

Location: Nova Scotia

Type of Employment: Term

Union Status: NSGEU - NSPG

About Us

The Geoscience and Mines Branch within the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables is dedicated to the stewardship and responsible advancement of the Province's mineral resource assets. We provide scientific support for public health and safety through various mapping initiatives, including regional geological assessments and hazard evaluations. Our Geological Survey Division comprises a team of skilled geoscientists committed to delivering high-quality, timely geoscience data and services to a diverse array of stakeholders, including governmental bodies, industry partners, academic institutions, and the general public.

About Our Opportunity

The Economic Geologist is tasked with conducting applied, high-quality, field-oriented research and activities to:

  • Enhance our understanding of mineral deposits across the province and assess the economic potential of these resources, particularly focusing on critical minerals.
  • Provide expert knowledge to operational teams (e.g., Regional Geoscience, Environmental Geoscience, Mineral Deposits) and offer leadership and mentorship to colleagues, students, and stakeholders.
  • Support the execution of the Nova Scotia Critical Minerals Strategy.

As the selected candidate, you will design and implement field-based geological evaluations and assessments aimed at identifying and quantifying economically viable mineral deposits within the province. You will gather, analyze, and disseminate scientific data, observations, interpretations, and recommendations, serving both as a senior geologist and a collaborator with internal and external teams.

Your responsibilities will include producing detailed mineral deposit models backed by comprehensive geoscience studies and reasoning, utilizing modern methodologies and technologies, while also developing innovative solutions to various geoscience challenges in Nova Scotia.

This position reports to the Manager of Project Operations within the Geological Survey Division.

Primary Responsibilities

Key duties of this role encompass:

  • Leading the design, execution, and management of advanced geoscience research projects throughout Nova Scotia, with a focus on identifying and quantifying metallic resource potential, especially for critical minerals. This includes detailed project budgeting, scheduling, reporting, and deliverables.
  • Collecting and interpreting high-quality geoscience data in a timely manner.
  • Conducting mapping, core logging, petrographic analysis, lithogeochemical assessments, and micro-analytical examinations of metallic mineral deposits.
  • Integrating data to develop metallogenic models that evaluate the mineral potential of the province at both local and regional levels, and creating robust economic models.
  • Publishing high-quality, timely geoscience outputs with an emphasis on scientific and technical documentation.
  • Supervising students and project collaborators during fieldwork and project activities.
  • Assisting in collaborative internal and external projects, including project administration, execution, and deliverables.
  • Engaging in outreach activities, including presentations and publications, and collaborating with senior management on topics related to mineral deposits and economic geology.
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety standards and other workplace policies and directives.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience

This opportunity may be ideal for you if you specialize in the research of mineral deposits and their economic viability. Candidates must possess a degree in Earth Science or Geoscience, with a focus on metallic mineral deposits, economic geology, geochemistry, petrology, and structural geology, along with 7 years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree with 6 years of experience; or a Ph.D. with 4 years of experience.

Applicants should demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience in field studies and metallic mineral deposits/economic geology, evidenced by a history of designing and executing successful field programs and publishing scientific and technical reports. Familiarity with Nova Scotian geology and awareness of current trends in geoscience are essential.

To excel in this role, you must exhibit a high degree of scientific skill and judgment in planning and executing research projects, possess strong oral and written communication abilities, and maintain a respected and authoritative presence within your field. Additionally, you should have well-developed analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills, along with a passion for fieldwork. Proficiency in GIS (preferably Arc), 3D modeling (e.g., LeapFrog Geo, Datamine), database management (e.g., Access or SQL), and office software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is important.

This position requires a high level of self-motivation and professional independence, with the ability to work with minimal supervision, as well as a demonstrated capacity to collaborate with and effectively mentor other scientists. The ideal candidate will be able to guide others in a professional and respectful manner while fostering opportunities for professional development.

Candidates must be registered with Geoscientists Nova Scotia or be immediately eligible for registration. A valid Class 5 driver’s license is also required.

We will evaluate the above qualifications and competencies through various assessment methods, including written examinations, standardized tests, oral presentations, interviews, and reference checks.

The Government of Nova Scotia offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a Defined Benefit Pension Plan, health, dental, life insurance, general illness coverage, short and long-term disability, vacation, and employee and family assistance programs.

Working Conditions

This role involves both office and fieldwork, with extended periods of field activities during the summer operational window, along with occasional travel for meetings or conferences. In-province travel to project sites will be necessary.

Additional Information

This is anticipated to be a two-year term position, with the end date contingent upon the successful candidate's start date.

The role requires an individual with significant geoscience expertise and credibility with senior management, staff, and stakeholders.
