OBJECTIVE:

The Director of Global Humanitarian Initiatives is tasked with delivering vision, leadership, and strategic oversight to the Canadian Partnership for Women and Children’s humanitarian efforts. This role is pivotal in ensuring that our disaster response initiatives are of exceptional quality, timely, and impactful, particularly focusing on marginalized communities in distress.

This position oversees the daily operations of the humanitarian response team and programs, serving as the main liaison for partnerships with key stakeholders. The Director will supervise and guide team members and volunteers, ensuring program excellence through collaboration with various partners in project planning, design, and execution. Additionally, this role is responsible for the efficient and effective use of resources in alignment with local community needs.

The Director will enhance the organization's disaster response capabilities by collaborating with internal teams, regional partners, and local organizations to create and implement strategies that position the Canadian Partnership for Women and Children as a leader in humanitarian response and recovery, maintaining a commitment to high-quality, faith-based disaster management.

This position reports to the Chief of Humanitarian Affairs and is an integral member of the organization’s Strategic Management Team. The Director is expected to work in close partnership with other program areas and our regional, functional, and fundraising teams to coordinate interventions, communications, fundraising efforts, and advocacy initiatives. With a broad operational scope and significant budget responsibilities, this role will foster relationships with government agencies, organizations, and associations within the NGO sector.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Leadership and Program Oversight

  • Provide strategic direction and planning for the humanitarian response initiatives, contributing to the achievement of our impact goals through the delivery of high-quality responses.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to determine organizational responses to emerging crises. Manage the decision-making process for disaster response operations, including security advisement and risk management.
  • Lead the management of program portfolios, ensuring effective design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of projects, while seeking opportunities for portfolio expansion through additional funding.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational standards and requirements for all international disaster response projects.
  • Oversee budget management and resource allocation to maximize impact and ensure effective financial stewardship.
  • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration among team members, field staff, and external partners.
  • Monitor and uphold best practices in humanitarian principles and program quality, ensuring regular evaluations of interventions.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing international disaster response team aligned with the organization’s values.
  • Support the professional development of team members through structured work plans and a culture of continuous learning.
  • Manage data collection and reporting systems to ensure accountability and compliance with donor requirements.
  • Enhance the organization’s capacity for disaster management through recruitment and training initiatives.
  • Participate in leadership meetings and coordinate with other teams on shared objectives.

Coordination and Networking:

  • Develop and implement strategies for engagement with key government and institutional donors.
  • Support fundraising efforts to secure resources for humanitarian initiatives.
  • Collaborate with partner organizations to enhance programming and operational policies.
  • Represent the organization in key humanitarian networks and working groups.
  • Identify and establish new partnerships with local organizations.

Resource Development and Mobilization:

  • Work with fundraising teams to launch donor appeals and campaigns.
  • Educate stakeholders about humanitarian needs and activities.
  • Diversify the organization’s funding portfolio through strategic partnerships.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Ensure responsiveness to the evolving global humanitarian landscape through evidence-based approaches.
  • Develop tools and guidelines to enhance disaster management capabilities.
  • Commit to safeguarding and preventing harm to affected populations.
  • Promote accountability in alignment with organizational standards and commitments.
  • Ensure team members receive necessary training and support for their roles.
  • Utilize technological advancements in humanitarian response initiatives.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This role includes the supervision and accountability of all team members and volunteers, fostering a high-performance culture and providing feedback to enhance team effectiveness.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Commitment to the organization’s mission and values.
  • Active engagement in the community and alignment with the organization’s faith-based principles.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in humanitarian response management and advocacy.
  • Strong understanding of humanitarian operations, including multi-sectoral responses.
  • Proven leadership in coordinating diverse humanitarian strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to analyze complex environments and act independently.
  • Willingness to travel extensively, including to high-risk areas.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in humanitarian assistance in cross-cultural settings.
  • Experience in supervision and management is essential.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in French and/or Spanish is an asset.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The role requires travel to challenging environments, which may impact physical and mental well-being.
