Position Overview
The Avon Maitland District School Board is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Sign Language Interpreter. This position is essential in providing support and access for students who are Deaf and/or hard of hearing, ensuring effective communication within the classroom and school environment through American Sign Language (ASL).
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver ASL interpretation services to students in various school settings, facilitating:
- Access to the Ontario Curriculum during instructional periods.
- Participation in school activities throughout the day, including field trips and assemblies.
- Effective communication in the school environment for identified students.
- Communication of auditory signals to ensure safety, such as announcements and emergency drills.
- Support the educational team in fostering an inclusive learning atmosphere for Deaf students by:
- Recognizing the classroom teacher's role as the primary educator.
- Assisting in the implementation of accommodations for instruction and assessment.
- Identifying opportunities for students to enhance their ASL vocabulary.
- Creating and facilitating peer interaction opportunities to strengthen relationships.
- Promoting a respectful learning environment while maintaining student dignity.
- Engaging in collaborative communication with the educational team.
- Provide ASL interpreting services as requested by the educational team.
- Participate in necessary meetings, including team discussions and case conferences.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the System Principal of Learning Services.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum three (3) year College Diploma in ASL-English Interpreting; a University Degree is advantageous.
- Active membership in good standing with the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) is preferred.
- Proven expressive and receptive ASL skills.
- Strong spoken and written English communication abilities.
- Experience working as an interpreter with school-aged children.
- Understanding of educational practices and the role of interpreters in student support.
- Commitment to promoting equitable and inclusive education for all students.
- Adherence to the CASLI Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct.
Compensation: $26.11 per hour, increasing to $27.11 per hour after a specified period.
Work Schedule: 35 hours per week, 10 months per year.
