Key Responsibilities

The Government of Alberta is seeking a dedicated Economic Policy Specialist to enhance our team within the Regional and Northern Economic Development Branch. This unit is pivotal in formulating policies, strategies, and initiatives aimed at fostering and advancing the economic landscape of Alberta's regions.

This role involves conducting comprehensive research and policy evaluation to guide senior management and relevant stakeholders in making informed decisions regarding policy alternatives tied to significant economic challenges and prospects. The insights generated will be essential for the Government of Alberta in addressing regional economic development matters, identifying collaborative best practices, assessing associated risks, and recognizing economic development opportunities that will shape strategic planning and policy formulation.

Collaborating closely with team members, including Managers and Directors within the branch, this position plays a vital role in facilitating departmental processes and ensuring a seamless exchange of information and counsel among stakeholders concerning a variety of economic and business development public policy topics. This necessitates advanced problem-solving abilities, systems thinking, sound decision-making, relationship-building, and effective business communication skills. The incumbent may also represent the department in interdepartmental and cross-ministry collaborative teams.

The primary duties include:

  • Conducting jurisdictional, market, economic, and statistical research and analysis.
  • Contributing to policy formulation aimed at enhancing business retention and fortifying support while boosting investment within the province.
  • Developing insights and recommendations on diverse economic subjects and initiatives aligned with the division's strategic objectives.
  • Coordinating interactions with technical experts within the department, across ministries, and with key stakeholders to formulate policy responses to pertinent issues.
  • Identifying significant economic development policies and trends at provincial, national, and international levels that could inform Alberta's strategic priorities.
  • Overseeing and supporting projects from inception to completion, involving detailed policy analysis, cross-jurisdictional comparisons, and economic assessments.
  • Delivering necessary analysis for information requests, action items, and briefings, while addressing inquiries for information and analysis from both governmental and public sources.
