Job SummaryWe are seeking an experienced and strategic real estate mortgage lending professional to join our lending team. As a key member of our organization, you will lead the underwriting of commercial and residential financing opportunities across Canada, including BC, Ontario, and Alberta. Your expertise will be instrumental in syndicating and participating in commercial loans with our business partners, ensuring seamless execution and strong relationships. Additionally, you will work closely with our Operations team to manage special loans in default or foreclosure until repayment. This pivotal role requires strong analytical, strategic planning, and communication skills, with a proven track record of success in mortgage origination, underwriting, funding, syndication, servicing, and monitoring.
Responsibilities- Develop and implement long-range vision to support the team's in-year business goals, establishing priorities and leading the underwriting team in developing people strategies to drive sales results.
- Lead the team to syndicate, structure, and negotiate profitable loans with business partners, aligning with existing business plans, policies, and procedures.
- Prepare underwriting, term sheets, and commitments, collecting due diligence materials, including underwriting requirements, pre-funding conditions, and preparing loan participation agreements, inter-lender agreements, and servicing agreements.
- Negotiate terms and conditions of inter-lender agreements, participation agreements, and servicing agreements.
- Organize, manage, train, and facilitate the underwriting, collections, and loss mitigation of residential and commercial loans, adhering to company policies and procedures.
- Act as a strong and disciplined risk management leader, ensuring flawless and consistent execution of initiatives.
- Build and maintain a diverse workforce that mirrors the communities we serve, leveraging strong human capital planning to ensure the right people are in the right roles.
- Provide consistent performance management, staff development, coaching, mentoring, and succession planning.
- Oversee the hiring, training, engagement, and development of staff, including credit analysts, residential mortgage underwriters, and support personnel.
- Recognize and reinforce team accomplishments using existing organizational tools and programs, as well as finding new, creative, and effective methods of recognition.
- Manage loans at a granular level to continually streamline, analyze, anticipate, improve profitability, promote staff cohesion, and deliver superb client service related to all lending enterprises.
- Research and develop new products, processes, and procedures, considering and enacting associated regulatory and compliance requirements.
- Work with the team to monitor loans for compliance with commitment letter terms and conditions, executing corrective action as needed with oversight and direction from the Principal.
- Travel may be required to attend industry conferences, visit business partners for syndication deals or special loans, and maintain high-touch relationships with high-impact prospects within the market.
- University degree in business administration or equivalent.
- Minimum of 10 years of mortgage origination, underwriting, funding, syndication, servicing, and monitoring experience in Canada.
- Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to present ideas effectively to both individuals and groups.
- Self-driven, highly motivated, and able to take the initiative required to achieve goals and objectives.
- Accredited Mortgage Professional or courses to satisfy provincial regulatory requirements.
- Experience with assessing and structuring residential, commercial, and residential land loans.
- Familiarity with mortgage law, loan agreements, and security agreements.
- Managerial leadership, talent development, negotiation skills, strategic market analysis, and professional business acumen.
- Strong relationship-building and management experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
