The Emergency Department Advanced Practice Nurse (ED APN) operates as a self-directed professional within an enhanced nursing capacity, engaging in a collaborative practice framework.
In partnership with emergency medical practitioners, the Advanced Practice Nurse oversees, directs, and delivers comprehensive healthcare to a designated patient demographic within a multidisciplinary team setting.
Current Scheduled Hours:
Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:00pm
Hours may vary based on the operational requirements of the healthcare facility.
Deliver, assess, and evaluate holistic patient care utilizing advanced nursing and medical management expertise.
Recognize and assess patients' physical and psychological health challenges.
Determine health education requirements for patients and families, both independently and in collaboration with the healthcare team.
Identify, order, and prioritize suitable diagnostic tests and procedures in consultation with medical professionals or according to established protocols.
Analyze laboratory, radiology, and other test outcomes.Prescribe medications and other therapeutic measures in consultation with physicians or in accordance with established guidelines.
Effectively communicate and clarify to patients/families and community healthcare members the diagnosis, treatment strategy, and associated implications in line with established protocols.
Accurately document assessments, plans, interventions, and evaluations of patient/family responses in the medical records.
Facilitate referrals to appropriate healthcare professionals or services.Act as an advocate for patients and families in matters such as treatment plans, complex conflict resolution, and addressing patient/family dissatisfaction.
Manage acute and emergency situations, including patient assessments in the emergency department.Provide personalized counseling and instruction to enhance patient/family understanding and management of specific health and lifestyle issues.
Offer independent consultations for managing healthcare concerns related to identified patients and families under the care of other services.
Adhere to hospital policies and procedures relevant to assigned responsibilities;Successful completion of a Master's degree in nursing.
Current membership in the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario (NPAO) or Registered Nursing Association of Ontario (RNAO).
A minimum of three years of recent experience in acute or emergency nursing.
Canadian Nurses Association certification in Emergency Nursing is preferred.
Proven experience and leadership in clinical practice, education, program development, and nursing research methodologies.
Demonstrated knowledge and capability in planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care.
Awareness of community resources for ongoing patient care support.
Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral), including understanding the legal requirements associated with documentation and health records.
Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare providers.Demonstrated proficiency in insight, self-awareness, and self-management consistent with high emotional intelligence.
Must be available to work various shifts as required, which may include weekends, statutory holidays, days, evenings, and nights.
