LEAD SECURITY SOFTWARE ENGINEER (STARSHIELD)

Starshield utilizes SpaceX's advanced Starlink technology to bolster national security initiatives. Unlike Starlink, which caters to consumer and commercial markets, Starshield is tailored for governmental applications, focusing on areas such as earth observation, secure communications, and hosted payloads. The Starshield team is dedicated to constructing robust in-space mesh networks, creating secure systems to ensure access to space, and developing next-generation communication and sensing software.

As a Lead Security Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the security landscape of our software products. We seek individuals with a proven history of delivering dependable software and a comprehensive understanding of the security architecture of modern Internet systems, including the cryptographic elements involved. You will maintain a holistic perspective, prioritize effectively, and navigate various levels of abstraction. Ideally, you possess significant expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Software development
  • Applied cryptography
  • Network security
  • Operating system security
  • Secure/Authenticated boot processes
  • Incident response and threat detection
  • Vulnerability analysis

Success in this role requires adaptability, clear communication, and the ability to foster productive relationships with other engineering teams. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and implement security infrastructure for Starshield, including cryptographic services and other critical security functions
  • Develop security features for Starshield systems, encompassing routers, dishes, gateways, and satellites
  • Integrate security into manufacturing processes and provide network services to support these initiatives
  • Maintain existing production systems and enhance security posture through direct implementation and strategic recommendations
  • Create prototypes and assist in identifying, designing, and testing security enhancements
  • Advance our mission of delivering secure and reliable Internet access to underserved communities

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related STEM field, with 5+ years of professional experience in security software development; OR 7+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, Golang)
  • Experience in designing and implementing security solutions for operating systems, distributed systems, or large-scale infrastructure

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Possession of an active Top Secret, Top Secret SCI, or DOE Level Q clearance, or the willingness to obtain one
  • Experience in enhancing security for complex systems
  • Familiarity with specialized security hardware such as Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs) and Hardware Security Modules (HSMs)
  • Solid understanding of network protocols, including the TCP/IP stack and UDP-based protocols
  • Experience in navigating large, intricate, interactive systems
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team
  • Proven capability to manage ambiguity and quickly learn new technologies
  • Advanced degree in a technical or engineering discipline

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as necessary
  • An active clearance may provide opportunities to engage in sensitive SpaceX missions, subject to pre-employment drug and random drug and alcohol testing

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay Range: Security Software Engineer /Senior: $168,000.00 - $230,000.00 per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is only one component of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also qualify for long-term incentives, such as company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, alongside potential discretionary bonuses and the opportunity to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short & long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks are also included. You will accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays annually. Exempt employees are entitled to 5 days of sick leave per year.
